Tips for a new runner?

Did any of you wait until you were at a certain weight to start running? Running HURTS right now... does it hurt less when you're smaller? Or should I just admit that I'm not a runner? You guys are all such an inspiration! I can't imagine running 1 km let alone 8-15 km in one day. Seriously, that's amazing.

I had lost about 14kg when I first tried it, and I also started from a lower BMI of 35, so it was perhaps a bit easier for me. Also very soon after I started, I purchased a treadmill and ran almost exclusively on that for ages. It really has taken me a year to build up the leg strength to be able to run 10kms out on the road several times a week without causing myself injury.

Slow and steady, do what you can, but do protect your knees and ankles. Even 20lb off will make a difference. Try to seek out softer surfaces if you possibly can.

Everybody can run. Not everybody can be really good at it, lol, I'll never break any land speed records, but everybody who wants to can run, barring specific injuries etc.

It's official. I want to run. I've wanted to run. I've said a million times when I hit x number in weight I will start. But no more. Today I will follow the Shape schedule and run 30 seconds/walk 90 ten times.

I've been working out on the elpytical, 30 minutes, intensly for a few months.

good luck on your running. I started slow too!!! Actually I started walking 2 minutes and running 30 seconds, it was all I could do. But now I ran my first 5 km race 2 weeks ago (37:48 was my time) and I ran the whole thing without needing to stop.

I love running now, and am on a 9 month program to build towards a 1/2 marathon in January. (I am hopeful, but know it is a big goal and will just enjoy the journey).

Thanks for the encouragement! You rock! Look at your stats and training for a 1/2 marathon! Amazing.

I did it. I work out during my lunch hour and today I walked 90 seconds and ran 30. I did that 10 times so for a total of 20 minutes. I'm so proud of me.

When I was done with that I did 20 minutes on the elypticial trainer too.

Yeah!

Oh, can someone tell me how to get rid of "pre bander" under my name? I'm a banded now.

Once I drop another 10lbs or so, I'm going to start running. It's a little hard on my gout ridden feet at this point. Stupid gout...

I just want to say, that Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday I did the walk/run thing. I'm excited to do it again today.

I found this thread just when I needed it.

So, tomorrow, I'm going to start the Cool Running "couch potato to 3 mile" routine.

I will run a 5k if it kills me. hahaha.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
