Pre-op Cheating or necessary adjustment

Recommended Posts

OK, I'm on day 2 of my full liquid pre-op diet. I have the Ketogenix vanilla shake that my doctor recommended I use. Here's the thing - it tastes absolutely horrible!!! There's nothing redeemable about this stuff. The chocolate is fine, and I can tolerate that, but I have 2 more weeks of this and need to use both flavors. So, to the vanilla I added 1/2 pack Carnation Instant Breakfast and used 1% milk instead of Water. Does that really count as cheating on the pre-op diet or an ok modification. I tried to do just liquid the way you are supposed to - 3 to 5 shakes in the day, but I only took in 330 cals and I don't want to put my body in starvation mode. Doing this will assure that I get at least 600 calories a day? Any thoughts??

You're still on a liquid diet. If you're really concerned, call your surgeon's office, but honestly, I do not really think it makes a difference.

Pre op diets are very challenging and it's not as if you're asking for validation to stop at a doughnut shop instead of drinking your shake. Do what you need to do to get through this time, in my opinion.

Hey it's still liquid so I would think it's all right.

Thanks guys. I'm 1/2 way through the container and once I finish and start on the choc shake, I'll drink that as is. I don't think it's gonna seriously screw up my surgery. I just don't want to waste the product or the $40 I spent on it!

I was told I could add sugar free syrups or a product called PB2. PB2 is a powdered Peanut Butter. They also have one that is peanut butter/chocolate. You can find it at specialty markets.

Make sure the carnation instant Breakfast is the sugar free kind.. you ABSOLUTELY don't want to be using it if there is sugar in there! (it's not about the calories, it's about the sugar, since sugars/carbs are the #1 most important thing to avoid on a preop)
