Dumping syndrome pre surgery

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Question for anyone who had experienced dumping syndrome prior to VSG surgery....how is it now after surgery? I had gall bladder removal surgery almost 3 years ago and the dumping syndrome has never gone away. I have miserably been putting up with it and have gradually just come to accept it as part of my existence. I know its supposed to be minimal with sleeve patients but I was wondering if anyone out there had it prior to surgery due to gall bladder removal and if it gets better or worse after VSG. My surgery is on 2~21 so I'm just soaking up info on every aspect from this wonderful site.

I had it before and still have it now. I'm pretty use to it. The good news is I have never suffered from the Constipation some post sleevers do, because of it.

Thanks mcwestfam! Nice to see the positive in the situation and I am pretty used to it...I was hoping for a change after surgery but definitely not the worst thing in the world.

My surgeon said sleevers don't/can't get dumping syndrome. It's so funny how every surgeon has different ideas...you'd think that our info would more the same. I guess a lot of docs go by what they've experienced with patients.

I had dumping syndrome before - hardly at all after. It has happened about 2-3 times since surgery 6+ weeks ago, but nowhere near as badly - mostly because of the teeny tiny amounts I can eat! I'm just making a practice to have my Protein first (which is what I'm supposed to do anyway!). When I do that, I don't seem to have any dumping issues.

BTW - my gastroenterologist had me taking immodium daily for the DS - which really worked pre-surgery. I haven't had to take it more than once post-surgery.

Thanks for the info! Just a question...did u have your gall bladder removed also or just had dumping syndrome? Also was the imodium working for u? Thanks for the info.

Thanks for asking this! I had mine removed in 2006 and when I'm especially gluttonous and/or caffeinated I have DS. So, needless to say, I've been curious about this too.

No - still have my gallbladder (so far!). Yes - the immodium worked both pre- and post-surgery!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
