Learn to Sip Now before your surgery lol

Recommended Posts

I thought I had the sipping part down until I had my surgery on Wednesday Jan 30th 2013. If you haven't mastered it before your surgery do it now. Every couple of hours I am spending 90 minutes to sip down 1 ounce of Protein, my pain meds and Water and believe me if I try to do it any faster it hurts. I stayed 1 night in the hospital and they wanted me to stay an extra cause I wasn't getting enough oxygen but I opted to get the tank set up at home instead, was much cheaper then paying for another night in the hospital. I have pain where the main incision is, but more when I try to drink to fast. I much preferred the pain meds they were feeding me in the IV in the hospital though, lol worked faster and went to sleep quicker.. :) After reading some of the stories here I think I'm having the same issues as others so I won't worry so much. Seems to be the norm for what we've had done. I've had no problem urinating yet, figured the bowels will do what they will when they've got something to do it with lol. Sitting is less painful sometimes then laying down. Although getting out of bed after laying down can be very painful. I know my life has changed and I'm ok with that, actually looking forward to doing so many things I've not been able to do before.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
