Surgery March 5th

Recommended Posts

So my date is set, and my big worry is how is this going to effect me 10, 20, 30 years from now. Is there going to be a commercial 5 yrs from now saying "did you or someone you know have gastric sleeve surgery?" "call us lawyers to get help". Stupid i know. I'm scared and excited at the same time. I want this, but dont at the same time. Maybe i wish there was more long term info on the sleeve. Just a worry wart I guess.

Here is the way I look at it. Staying morbidly obese, there might not be a 10, 20, 30 years from now...

I have not stopped smiling since waking up post-op :)

You'll do great and if you ever need to reach out, don't hesitate!

Thanks, thats also what the little voice says in my head. I just have to listen to it more often and stop stressing. Im so tired of not being able to play with my kids because im out of breath or my knees hurt so bad. Im looking so forward to buying a pair of jeans from a reg store too. Im so sick of being the big guy, i want to be the healthy big guy. Im 6'6" and 352lbs. Cant wait to see what ill be a year out. Sorry for the rambling.

Though the surgery is new. There have been other reasons surgeries were preformed remove part is the stomach and I think the prognosis on those long term are good :)

Oh and you probably will see those commercials.. For the lap band :)

I really hope so. The thought of staples in my stomach is the part that bothers me.

Lap band scares me more. I hear alot of bad things about it. It was my first pick when i started my journey on WLS.

Ok I get it.. But if it makes you feel better I have 3 metal pins in my hip, put there when I was 10 years old! And look at me an old lady alive and kicking!

I am totally unaware of any staples in me (although I know they are there because I have seen the pictures!) - in fact I had to get an MRI for a non-VSG related health issue and it was no problem.

Go onto YouTube and watch the 100's of people who have documented their VSG experiences. Look at their first videos and their last videos and notice how great they look at how much LIFE is in their eyes.

I only have 6 videos uploaded, but feel free to check them out - search VSG KIRK

I think i worry because this is my first real surgery. I know it will be over before i know it and i will be like that wasnt that bad. Just hate the wait.

Thank You for just interacting on this subject. Its hard to talk to people around me about this. There all like just go on a diet, or weight watchers. I hate that comment. If it worked it would be called the way, not a plan.

Waiting is hard! And it gives you time to think, stress... But if you researched this and your doctor trust your decision. And choose health and happiness :)

That's just like telling a depressed person, "Just get over it" - so annoying!

The only person you have to listen to is yourself and if your own intuitive "little voice" is telling you this could be a great tool for weight loss, then go for it.

I guarantee those same people are probably just scared for you and those asinine comments are their way of dealing with it. Trust me, they will be some of the first to tell you how great you look! Unless they are jealous - then just get rid of them! Not in a mafia way, just out of your life! LOL

You hit the nail of my worries right on the head, AFinch. :/ I am hoping to have my surgery date be March 8th, still waiting to hear if I get that date or not.

I am absolutely worried about long-term complications as I am only 26. I'm worried about surgery because I've never had any surgery before. I'm worried about infections that can be picked up from the hospital. I'm worried about energy level issues because I'm in school and doing this mid-semester.

So many doubts and worries, but Kirk2013 is right. What option do we have? Stay fat, get fatter, get sick, then die early? The overwhelming majority of people on here have said one thing: they wish they had done it sooner. So I am going to put trust in that and just go for this. We'll be fine. :) Come join us over in the March 2013 sub-forum: http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/forum/328-march-2013-sleevers/

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
