Unplanned meals away from home

Recommended Posts

Today is the first time I've forgotten to bring my lunch with me to work. I live an hour from my office--I can't just run home. I have nobody to eat lunch with, so I don't want to go to a "real" restaurant.

So it brings up an interesting question....

What can I swing through a drive-through and buy that's healthy and tolerable for me...and has a good amount of Protein?

Suggestions...?

:rolleyes

And don't say a grilled chicken sandwich without the bun because that stuff's like plastic and I'd have to chew it for like 2 weeks before swallowing it.

If I absolutley had to eat fast food I would try Beans of some sort, from Taco Bell or chili from Wendy's. I have tried fast food four times since surgery (nine months ago) and have PB'd horribly every time, thus leading me to the conclusion it's not really food at all.

The worst is french fries. I feel my esophagus shutting off even thinking about them!

panera bread - variety of Soups

won ton Soup or egg drop soup

mashed potatoes with extra gravy (kfc)

side of au jus (beef broth that usually comes with french dip) (Arby's) with jamoca shake (arby's)

wendy's chili

sonic - will make sugar free shake if you ask and they have smoothies

Becareful with Beans. Mexican restaurants ( and i use this term LOOSLEY when i say taco bell) Adds almost 1/2 of it with lard to fill it out and make it creamy. 85 cents is not a bargain if it has the health equivelint as a whopper.

I have worked in restaurants for 17yrs. There is a reason stuff tastes better then our own cooking. When was the last time you scooped a bunch of lard into your dinner to make it creamy and delicious. :)

The Soups sound like a better idea to me or the smoothies

Leatha I am terribly sorry but I can't resist teasing you about your Freudian slip up there. Yeah... a tray of sex sounds great for lunch any day of the week! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Hi

I was banded on 10/19/06. I just got back from McDonalds and had a grilled chicken salad. I ate the chicken first, very moist. After I ate about 50% of the greens.

Don't forget, they have yogurt parfaits, skip the granola.

We have a drive through called Beyond juice, they sell real fruit smoothies and excellent sandwiches. I usually pass on the smoothie because I feel like its too high calorie, but in a pinch id do one. But often times I'll order a sandwich and request it without the bread. Egg salad is my fav. They give you about a 3/4 cup of eggsalad, some lettuce, a few slices of Tomato, some potato salad, and a pickle all for under 5 bucks. Yum.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
