smoothies post-op..how much...

Recommended Posts

How much of a Protein smoothie should I have a few days after surgery? They are not too thick, but I need to drink enough protein without stretching the pouch??? One smoothie is 100 calsa and 25grms of protein. We need at least 60. Not sure if I should brake it in sections but them I might not get enough in a day...less than 800cals and not enough protein...:help:

I agree with Leatha, just go slow and you'll know if your taking in to much at a given time. Listen to your body's signals.

Hi Angela. I am just 11 days post op so we're kinda in the same boat. I have found that the Odwalla Super Protein Drinks are amazing. They are about the only thing I like although they are a little expensive. But, you will only need one or two of them a day. At day four, I was so still recovering. I drank one Odwalla Super Protein pumpkin flavored and I blended in two scoops of vanilla Protein Powder. That gets you really close to the 60 that you need in a day and you can sip it at your leisure. I found the pumpkin flavor at Whole Foods Market in New Orleans on Magazine Street. Otherwise, most health food stores and upscale grocery stores carry Odwalla products (I should become a rep for Odwalla!). They seem to be in their own Odwalla cold case in front of the store at the end of an aisle. Good luck. They also come in Vanilla Almond, chocolate and original which is sort of like strawberry bananna. The pumpkin is amazing because it is thin and when you add the protein powder it doesn't get ridiculously thick. At my one week follow-up I ran this by my nutritionist and she said it was great...but, if you have a problem with diabetes, it is sort of high in sugar.:)

I like Worldwide Protein Shakes. They are available at Trader Joe (Vanilla and chocolate in 21g and 35g of Protein, $1.69 each for the 21s and $2.29 for the 35s here in Maryland). The 35s are also available at GNC (priciest $2.99 each in Vanilla and Chocolate) and at the Vitamin Shoppe (singly $2.79 for 35g, but if you buy a 12 pack case for $27.99 it drops to $2.33 each). Vitamin Shoppe also carries all the flavors (Vanilla Cream, Chocolate Cream, strawberry Cream, banana Cream, and Cookies n' Cream, which tastes like liquid Oreos). I order them online when I can get free shipping for $49 or more--usually it is $99 for free shipping. If there is a store in your area you can get 12 packs for $27.99. I like them for grab and go, because I don't have to mix up stuff. They are low in sugar and fat, 160-170 cal for the 35s, and 2 a day would net you 70g protein. A little pricey, but I was banded 3/25/08 and I still drink one each weekday. On the weekends I make smoothies.< /p>

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
