Approval letter's surgery date - is it correct?

Recommended Posts

My surgeon's office called on Monday to tell me I was approved, and to expect a call in the next few days from the surgery scheduler, who would give me a surgery date. I haven't heard from the scheduler yet, but got an approval letter in the mail today from Anthem. It says I'm approved for a hospital stay on Feb. 19th, and leaving Feb. 20.

Does that mean my surgery is Feb. 19th?? Or is that just a random date that the surgeon's office gave them? It says on the back of the letter that if the date changes, then the insurance company has to approve it again....

This happened to me also, date moved from nov 28 to dec 5. They have to provide a date to insurance for approval. This date can move (depending on your surgery coordinator and surgeon availability) they just call insurance with an updated date once approved. The ins will send a letter with new date if it changes. just be sure to advise the coordinator of the dates l. The letter. No worries!

Same thing happened to me also. The surgeons office just has to give a dummy date to get the approval. It was only a 2 week difference in time though. Congrats!

I received a letter also from my insurance company with the wrong date I spoke with the surgeons office and they told me they had to give a tentative to the insurance company but they will or already have changed it and I should expect another letter with the correct date. You were only approved for a 1 day stay, I got approved for 5 not sure how but very glad just in case i need more than a couple. The other good thing is I am 400 dollars from meeting my deductible, isn't that lovely...yes yes yes

Thanks guys! Hopefully the surgery scheduler calls soon with the real date. :)

Diva, 5 days?? That's great, especially with only $400 left on your deductible!

Just got my call and sure enough, the date is Feb 26th! Scheduler said what you guys told me, that it's just a dummy date they have to give insurance.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
