Ok this is what I was told post op...should have 3 meals plus 2 Snacks...make each one last for about 45 minutes and do not drink for at least 30-45 minutes before the meal and 45- 60 minutes after a meal, you need 64 ounces of fluids and should drink 2 ounces every 15 minutes...given that this is what I came up with:

9am - drink 2 ounces

9:30am - 10:15 am - EAT

11am - 12pm drink 8 ounces

1230pm - 1:15pm - EAT

2pm - 3pm drink 8 ounces

330pm - 415pm EAT

500pm -6pm drink 8 ounces

630pm - 715pm EAT

800 pm - 930pm drink 12 ounces

10pm - 1045pm EAT

1130pm - 230am drink 24 ounces....

Still short by 2 ounces and only get to sleep for 6.5 hours which will be spent getting up and peeing since you just drank all of that water!

No wonder no one can get their Protein and fluids in! I know every doc and NUT is different but didn't anyone ever sit down and do this math before they told the patients this?

Can you tell I was bored tonight?

Lol thank you for this! Also I would add the Vitamins I need to take spaced two hours apart five times a day! Geez :-D

I joke with my husband all the time that this is like a puzzle and somehow all the pieces are supposed to fit. I just do the best I can... lol

I did the same ridiculous calculation as well. Then I said screw it and just work to do my best. Part of my reasoning to have this surgery was to begin a new lifestyle, but it was also to make it a realistic lifestyle. Scheduling regimented fluids during a crazy busy work day full of meetings, conference calls, and fighting fires just isn't realistic.

I sort of touched upon this very topic with my NUT at my follow up this week. I need to make this a livable tool for me or it's not going to work.

Anyway, I digress. Just wanted to commiserate!

Wow! 45 mins to eat? I was told by my dietician to follow the 30-20-30 rule. I don't drink anything for 30 before....take 20 mins to eat because anything longer your body starts digesting and you can just keep eating trying to fill up your stomach....then nothing to drink for another 30 mins. I usually start my day around 7am and get everything including Vitamins, Water, meals and Protein Drinks done by 9pm.

Just do what you can. I remember going from a pre-sleeve love of eating and obsession with food to post op, feeling like eating was a chore and hating the fact that I always had food or drink in my hand so I could meet my goals!

It certainly helped me break some of the food addiction, though. ;)

Just focus on hydration first post op (dehydration is the most common issue you could encounter and prevent on your own) and Protein second. You'll eventually find a schedule for eating that's best for you, and sorry to say, it's not likely to be the one you've got there. That's a full time job!

Good luck,

~Cheri

yeah see someone did the math and then told the patients this....this at least sounds more doable! I just try to do the best I can....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
