bittahoney 12 Posted January 31, 2013 Start walking as soon as you feel you are able. You might want to trying sitting up in bed with your feetl off the side to see if you can tolerate sitting up first. The nurses should be able to assist you in walking if you feel you are able to do so.

PdxMan 4,292 Posted January 31, 2013 No, you should be walking right now. They had me up and walking half an hour after I returned from post-op. You gotta get moving. Ask them again to take you for a walk. She is probably just busy and doesn't want to take the time. Insist someone take you.
Annie B 89 Posted January 31, 2013 A nursing assistant can also help you walk - they just don't want you to fall. It's usually just the first time out of bed. I got up as soon as possible - can't remember how many hours after surgery. Once they helped me to the bathroom the first time, I was able to walk in the hall. Takingcontrol 467 Posted January 31, 2013 Yep, you need to get up & moving as soon as you can, will help get rid of the gas & get things moving again! MAKE them listen to you & let you walk!
nsquared 232 Posted January 31, 2013 Congrats...yep you should be walking within about 3 - 4 hours of surgery.
ambalam 54 Posted January 31, 2013 I was up right away too. As soon as they wheeled me into my room i jumped up and put my clothes back on.! A little too hastily as I broke my iv thingy in my hand, thank the lord for pain meds. I rested for a few after that but was up and walking up and down the halls whenever I woke. I would definitely harass someone to let me walk if i wasn't able to do it on my own. Its important to move to help prevent blood clots. Best wishes for a speedy recovery! PerezL84 66 Posted January 31, 2013 Thank you guys! Yea I asked a different nurse and she sure helped me. Wow I feel so relief now. The only pain I have is a small bit of gas in my stomach and my incisions which are very small. Will keep you posted. I can't drink anything past 11pm being that they are doing some tests in the morning. Thank you once again.
