Is there such a thing as TOO MUCH PROTEIN?

Recommended Posts

Just curious if there is some sort of reasonable limit on daily Protein. My plan has me at 70 grams per day. I could add more if I add Protein Powder to my Water (although not my favorite thing) and I'm wondering if it would have a benefit or if 70 grams is sort of the most a body can use in a day? And if you can add more, when does it become too much?

My surgeon said not to consume more than 80. The body can't consume much more than that. I think I read the execs will be stored in your liver as fat. Some weight lifters consume high amounts of Protein to bulk up. But for us sleeves 60-80 I what my surgeon and nutritionist advised

My nutritionist said 60-70 grams of Protein. Excess protein can be stored as fat & is also hard on your kidneys.

My research has shown that AllThatJazz is pretty much correct. The body can consume only so much Protein at any given time. It is widely accepted that 30g of Protein at a time is the maximum at a single point of intake, and anything in excess is stored first in the liver as glycogen. If your glycogen stores are full in your liver, then it is stored as fat in your body's fatty tissues. So, 30g max, 2-3 times per day is what is recommended.

Are there exceptions to this? Sure. If you are exercising rigorously, then you will want to up it. Weight lifting and adding pounds to your lifts weekly? Definitely need more.

The quality of protein is also important. Stay away from the shots and focus on whey protein. It is the quickest absorbing. Of course, there are exceptions ... but stick with this and you'll be fine.

YEP extra Protein gets stored as fat just like anything else. I would stick to the standard 60-70 grams a day. Anything more than that is probably just slowing down weight loss unless you are working out hard.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
