Hopefully I am contributing to this thread as I have not read all the responses. For me, canned salmon from trader joes worked really really well during my initial food selection when starting on solids. The reason I like the canned wild salmon is because it was really easy to measure out 2 ounces with a measuring cup because it was really soft (read: easy to eat) And very portable (small can). It was also very tasty and i ate it every day for lunch until i could handle other Proteins like chicken, pork and beef. I still like eating salmon at home and when eating out now at 7 months out, but do not eat the canned salmon so much any longer, I do not like the taste of white wish as much just because there is not much flavor.

Actually Stef, for just this once :P I have to disagree with you.

What?!?!?! Thems fightin' words, Iggy!

I find denser fish (halibut in particular) much harder to eat than salmon or rock fish or even cod. Then if you go with cheeks, gad that's like eating scallops and I might get one down. For halibut I tend to have about an ounce to an ounce and a half, but for salmon I can eat three if it's moist (cooked correctly).

Interesting. I haven't had a ton of fish yet, but the same portion sizes of salmon, tuna and scallops all feel about the same to me.

I would also suggest Tilapia or Salmon. They are both my go-to when I'm at a resteraunt and not sure on healthy choices there. I do ask to make sure they don't cook them in butter or put sauces on them!

I am one of those that all my co-workers, family and most friends know about my surgery but just today encountered a funny a lunch. After a meeting a group of 6 women stopped at a new diner-type place. Now, I'm not usually nervous eating out anymore because I can usually find something, only eat a 1/3 of it and take the rest home or split with someone. But, for lunch their choices were meatlof, lazagna, chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken or finally baked chicken with stuffing. So, I tell the server I would like the baked chicken, but she could just leave off the stuffing and then fresh green Beans. She says, "Our stuffing is really good, do you want me to put some on there for you?", and I said no, thanks I just want the chicken. She pressed me again and my friend looked at her and said, "She.does.not.want.the.stuffing" LOL! Just be persistant!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
