How do you sip?!

Recommended Posts

Starting the liquid diet today. Surgery Feb 13. I'm worried that I will forever drink/eat too fast! shake went down like nothing. I'm full. No issues really, but I can't figure out how slow is the right slow for later.

Oh you will definitely know how to drink slow after the surgery... as your stomach will certainly "communicate" with you. My best advice is to think of a medicine size type of cup, and taking little sips from that the first couple of days after surgery. Then you will graduate to bigger "sips" as the days and weeks go on. I am 3 months out and still cannot "gulp" or drink like I did prior to surgery.

I agree. Your body will give you negative feedback if you eat or drink too fast. I used the little 2 tbsp medicine cups at first. Then I used my kids old sippie cups for shakes for awhile.

In the beginning it will be really slow. I have always been a fast drinker and sometimes over do it but I have found a cup tht helps. They are called tervis tumblers or something and they have a lid that doesn't really allow for more than a sip and there is a slide close/open on it. I take this cup everywhere and it really helps. I got sick of looking silly with my son's go diego go cups! lol

I'm 9 days out and you'll kno how to sip cause when I took to big of a sip I would feel it in my chest and when you sip you will feel the liquid going down even when it hit your stomach but I have notice that my sip have gotten bigger and I can take more w out waiting a few seconds

You can get some 1oz. medicine cups on Amazon, if you don't have one handy. I used them in the hospital and the first few days I was home. I agree, you'll get the hang of it really quickly. I was a fast drinker before and did not find it hard to mind what I was doing.

I live about an hour from the Tervis tumbler headquarters here in Florida. They are sold all over down here. If you don't have stores that sell them go online. I must have a dozen in my kitchen. And you can order them in your fav sports team, school, hobby, etc. the sippy lids are awesome to and they keep cold drinks cold and Hot Drinks hot. A little pricey but well worth it.

I was told to drink a 1 oz medicine cup of Water every 15 minutes... and to take 3 sips to empty it... so you could practice that now if you want. Just fill that medicine cup up with water and take a small sip, swallow, wait a second or two (I was waiting several seconds right after surgery) then take another small sip... and then another... That's how small the sips need to be right after surgery... but it gets a little better pretty fast... I'm a week out now and I still sip but I don't have to think about it as much as I did at first.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
