Arrghhh.. Should I fill the day before Thanksgiving?

Recommended Posts

Hello All:

I'm curious what would you do? I had my 2nd fill on Oct 26 and it doesn't seem to have taken well. I called the dr. office today to schedule another fill, and the soonest I could get in is Nov. 22nd. I said yes to this not even thinking that the day after that is Thanksgiving, and if I get the fill I will be on liquids for three days, but its hard getting an appointment at my dr. for a fill.

I'm having Thanksgiving at my house for 11 people.

On the one hand, right now I have no restriction and could really use a fill, and in the grand scheme of things, its only one holiday. I can still have a couple glasses of wine and I bet I could get away with mashed potatoes and gravy.

On the other hand, do I want to not eat on Thanksgiving?

Hmmm.. just gathering opinions before I decide if I should call and try to reschedule.

Thanks for all your help and input.

Robin

OOoooooooooo tough one. First I was going to say HELL YA!

But now I see that you are required to have 3 days of liquids.

So I guess that makes it a very personal call.

Do you want to miss this meal?

Does it make any difference to you?

CAN you make an appointment for Monday?

If so then do that.

Good luck with your decision and Happy Thanksgiving!

Hey, I'm in the same predicament. My first fill is scheduled that day too. Do I really want to do that? I don't know. I know I want to eat something. Nobody but hubby knows about me having surgery so if AI don't eat, it's really gonna draw attention. I can probably get away with just eating a little and no one would notice. Hmmmmm....just don't know. My hubby says to wait until the next week. I'm kind of leaning that way too.

I had a fill last year on Dec. 23. (I only have to do a day of liquids and a day of mushies though.) I remember having some dressing with tons of gravy on it, 2 bites of green bean casserole, and some pumpkin pie. Not sure if that really qualifies as mushies, but it was 2 days after my fill and I had no problems at all. I didnt miss the rest of the meal at all. I just sat and picked at my plate and enjoyed the company. It was pretty liberating to watch everyone ELSE get stuffed for a change while I was just content.

Wanted to add....I was totally in the closet regarding being banded and NO ONE noticed that I wasnt really eating much. I put a piece of turkey and ham on my plate and gave it piece by piece to my husband. I had lost around 20 lbs already and I guess everyone just assumed I was dieting...or really totally did not notice!

I would wait until after Thanksgiving. I have a lot of swelling and have a hard time getting anything down after a fill. The fill I just had last week started off fine by within a couple of hours, I was so tight I couldn't even swallow my saliva and was in major discomfort until I finally got in to see another doctor at the end of the evening. If that were to happen, I wouldn't want to try to find a doctor who will unfill you unless you go to the emergency room. Being too tight is worse than not being tight enough. Just watch the quantity of the food you do eat on Thanksgiving. On the other hand, this fill not be the "one" that works for you either. You just really have to weigh (no pun intended) the pluses and the minuses and make your decision. Good luck on this next fill.

I got through Christmas last year having only just been banded, I was on mushies, just blended my turkey and veg with a bit of gravy. And plum pudding is mushy enough. Tiny quantities, a glass of wine, I was so excited by what was to come and the thought of how I would look and feel Christmas 2006 that I didnt care.

I'd go for it. Its only food.

I say go for the fill. Who cares about the food! Plus, I agree with disneynut, if you need a quick un-fill who will there be to help you over that long 4 days?

Nothing tastes as good as thin feels!

What is your goal? To lose weight and live a new lifestyle? Yes, Thanksgiving is a great holiday, but it's just food. If you're like me, you probably ate enough at those meals in your lifetime to last you a lifetime. I'd go for the fill, since you need it! I got a fill the day before going on vacation for a week last year and I can say that I didn't regret if for a minute! I went on vacation to have fun, not just eat! It's a personal philosophy, but keep in mind what your longterm goal really is! Good luck to you!!!

Pass on the fill. Not because of the meal, but because of the long holiday. As far as the food, start mentally rehearsing now EXACTLY what you're going to eat and the quantity. That way, the meal won't turn into a feast (or rather a feastette since you're already banded. LOL).

I'd postpone the fill if it was me, but not so you can eat to your heart's content. After my fill I found I needed to be really attuned to my body and ease my way into the new restriction over a few days. The added stress of holiday preparation and company would have been a lot for me to handle in addition to the new restriction.

And, as mentioned, the office will be closed for the long weekend. The thought of sitting in an ER or urgent care center on a holiday would be enough for me to wait a few days for the fill.

Just my 2 cents, opinion worth price charged.

Take it from someone who's been there.

I guess I'm in the minority because I say "Get the fill." Please.

Thanksgiving? An all-American holiday of gluttony. This year you have something to really be grateful for: a tool that will help you fight against obesity.

To me that is much more important than some food I'm not going to remember in a few days (but will last on my hips forever). I don't believe in getting an unfill (or postponing a small fill) before a vacation or a holiday so I can eat. That's sad. :cry

When I read people saying "Oh I don't want to get a fill so I can enjoy myself.." then I think it's sad that they associate being well-restriction with giving up something.

Trust me, as an obese person I didn't missed any meals yet - but I have missed on opportunities due to being overweight.:) I'm not letting that happen anymore.

So it's an easy decision - I'd get the fill.

Thanksgiving is one holiday on a calendar, but good restriction and slow, steady weight loss is a gift you can enjoy every single day.

I was filled today, the day before Thanksgiving. I'm not feeling a lot of restriction at the moment.. but i'm hoping it kicks in by tomorrow... I don't want to use the holiday as an excuse to eat. How long did it take for some of you to feel the restriction after the first fill?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
