Just starting on my journey

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I am new to VST and just had my first consultation with the bariatric nurse on friday. I have a long way to go before i am scheduled for surgery but i am ready!

I have struggled with my weight my whole life and i have come to a point where something has to be done. I have to lose 5% of my weight, (about 20 lbs) and keep it off, meet with a nutritionist, physical therapist, and psychologist for evaluation, then attend 5 behavior modification group sessions before i meet with the surgeon. Seems like a lot to do but it is worth it!

I am doing all of this for a very important reason.... i want to be a mom. My husband and i just learned that IVF is the only option for us and my BMI needs to be 35 or lower for the best possible results for my age group. I am almost 40. At first i didn't think that would be a lot of weight until i googled a BMI chart and realized that to go from a BMI of 51 to 35 would be around 100lbs!!! So since it would be unlikely that i could get that weight off on my own in a year, i decided to look into the sleeve and i am glad that i did. Its worth putting off all the hormones and therapy in order to have a healthy pregnancy and child.

So thankful that i found this forum! So much inspiration here!

Hi, i am new on my journey also. I have meet with NUT, been to seminalr, had first part of Psych eval, meet with Surgeon. I am praying for a may date. I have a low BMI, and cannot lose weight. or I will be out.I do have High BP, and high cholesterol. I am just tired of being heavy, and as a nurse I am scared of diabetes and the cardiac issues my family has. Since we are both new, hoping we can encourage each other here!!!

I am also hoping for a may date. I am in school full time for a career change and a date during a semester break would be perfect for me.

I also have high BP and my doctor diagnosed me as a pre-diabetic. Yes, Peggers, i need all the encouragement i can get!

I am new here too. I have been going thru the motions to get a date set since July 2012. I have my nut visits done, psyc eval done and my 6 month pcp visits done. I was finished in November. I found out once everything was turned in to the ins gal at the surgeons office, that my surgeon was leaving the practice! I was so upset!! So panic mode set in, concerned about wether he would be able to still do my surg, since he was leaving practice. The ins girl submited my info to ins company and I was approved at the end of November. Then was told if I planned to stay w/ my surgeon they would need to submit again under new tax ID. Finally after finding out he could continue to be my surgeon, I was finally approved the 2nd time, which was. 3 weeks ago. Now waiting to hear from the new practice, as to when my final seminar is and surgery date. I have sort of lost interest with all that is going on, one day I am excited and the next not. Been a roller coaster! My Bmi is at about 41 and I am a diabetic, I was so looking forward to the sleeve to finally be able to be a healthier person ESP for the 16 grandchildren I have. My highest weight has been 310 and now down to 255. I have been heavy most of my life.

So with that said I pray we can all get thru the red tape and get movin on to a much healthier life and be happy!!! I look forward to it. I like this web site, it lifts me up when I have those down days!

Good luck girls and guys!!! :)

Very happy to have some new support buddies!! We can help each other thru this experience, and it will be interesting ride I think!! I am really starting today implementing some of the suggestions from the NUT I attended today. She mentioned to start using a salad plate at this point, to help adjust to the much smaller amount of food we will be able to eat after surgery. Also as i am a nurse who works at night, I was worried about the no caffeine, esp. so far prior to surgery, I am going to start doing half caf and half Decaf, instead of all decaf. So baby steps..

Gotta love cell phones and small keyboards! Anyhoo, my husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for 4 1/2 years with no results. I was in a fertility forum for overweight people and one comment someone said about themselves stood out to me.. That no matter how much you want a baby, it is selfish to expose a unborn baby to all the additional risks and complications that come with as much excess weight as I have- even if you find a doctor willing to do fertility treatment at my weight. My current BMI is 51- 5'6" and 316 lbs at age 33. My husband already had the sleeve 6 months ago and had been a great role model for me- his user name is fiddleman. I had my informational seminar last Thursday with my husband's surgeon and he says the sleeve is the right fit for me too- he likes to "keep it in the family" sincere husband will know what I'm going through and we can suport each other. Sounds good! I'm excited for all the other pluses that come with being a "loser" but I'm praying a cute baby bump is in my near future after I hit goal!

PHOENIX!!! OMG we are in the same boat here! My BMI and highest weight is 312, now 300. We have tried so many years to have a baby and i decided, even though i am 39, i would rather be a bit older and healthier than risk the complications from having a pregnancy at 300 lbs. Not to mention that most fertility specialist won't do IVF or at least you are limited as to what can be done if BMI is over 40.

My husband and i are going through this process together as well. The plan is to do all the nutrition, PT and group sessions together and i will be first for surgery and once i heal, he will go as well. Its so nice to see that other couples are going through this together, it really works to be on the same page with everything.

Good luck to you... and heres to our future baby bumps, and looking cute in maternity clothes!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
