Can I drink coffee with caffeine?

Recommended Posts

I am only two weeks out ...but I would love a cup of hot coffee with caffeine, can I have caffeine? Or will irritate my stomach?

I was told by my surgeon that I can have nothing with caffeine in it because the stomach is so small now that only a little bit of caffeine causes problems. Decaf tea, decaf herbal tea or decaf coffee is fine.

I tried iced tea three weeks out and boy was I sensitive to the caffeine. I kid you not, 4 tablespoons kept me up for 2 days. I don't tend to drink caffeine so maybe I'm just weird

I have no restriction on coffee, just can't add cream. But I didn't use cream before, so no big deal. I have about 12 oz a day of coffee.

As with most things it differs with every surgeon. My surgeon had no restrictions on caffeine for that matter I was given caffeinated coffee in the hospital the day after my surgery and have drank at least 1 cup every day since. They say it will effect you more after surgery, but I have never had any problem with caffeine before or after surgery, I can drink a cup of coffee right before bed and not have a problem. It is also a natural diuretic which is actually helpful in not getting constipated, but can cause some added problems with dehydration if your not careful. As with everything you should probably ask you surgeon but this is my experiences.

At two weeks, I probably would not and let things get fully healed. Caffeine was the one thing that I did not or would not give up. There's enough restrictions in this process, and I am okay giving up most foods and alcohol, but caffeine, sorry no can do!

I got coffee in the hospital as well, on my last day there. I couldn't have it on my pre-op diet, so it was welcome!!!!

Caffeine is a diuretic, so with the relatively low consumption of liquids at this phase of your journey, most medical teams would recommend staying away from any caffeine for awhile. You will be able to have it again (I'm having a Caffe Mocha right now) so don't worry. Just do the right things now to avoid any compications.

I didn't drink it for awhile myself, which was hard because Was a coffee drinker and had headaches if I didn't have it every morning .

But now I mix my Beans half Decaf half regular...

Funny though I find as the months go on I am drinking less...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
