Couscous as replacement item?

Recommended Posts

I'm 7wks out and starting to meal plan w/regular foods. I'm fine w/getting most of my Proteins in via solids, but having difficulty w/whole grains. What is whole grain considered that isn't a starch? And can couscous be substituted? I recently tried 1/4 c. and it was wonderful!!! I ate it as a side, not a mixture and w/grilled veggies and pork loin. It was wonderful!! Just wondering what else is considered a "whole grain" other than bread. My surgeon's regular diet plan calls for concentrating on Protein (of course) first, then vegetables (non starchy) and then whole grains. Any advice would be helpful.

Couscous is actually considered a Pasta. I love it too but I'd recommend sticking to the whole grains like long grain brown rice or quinoa which is also a great source of Protein

My NUT actually recommended it as a side dish. I wouldn't eat it every day, but it's a sensible carb.

Excuse me for assuming that my NUT knows what she's talking about. I think it's fine in moderation. Don't be so rude.

Just remember moderation, not deprivation.

Ok sorry ,you asked! I just read the label didn't make you eat it or not, perhaps maybe your nut got this one wrong ! Pasta is pasta it's just my opinion that at 7weeks out we are better served learning about what complex carbs we like or can tolerate than how much we like pasta . As for moderation that came down the road ,I was very rigid with my diet before I hit goal .

Thanks for the info all, I know that it's still a carb (pasta)...and yes, moving away from those types of foods. I haven't tried quinoa yet...and brown rice is common. The couscous I had wasn't pre-boxed or "instant" it was in a container that listed 1/4c. as a serving and had 17g. of Protein with 23carbs

Any other ideas for whole grains?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
