16 days Post-Op & incision is open

Recommended Posts

Hey guys!

I have read a lot of threads but can't seem to find my answer... So I will have to throw it out there. I'm 16 days post-op and my one incision (below my bra line) is still open. It doesn't hurt, isn't red/swollen/leaking but it doesn't seem to be closing up? My information package said this can happen and to keep it dry & clean as we all heal at different speeds. I'm not sure if I've spent too much reading about it and have myself worked up or if its "normal"? I have been cleaning it with a wound wash and have left it uncovered. Any suggestions would be ace! Thanks :) I have uploaded a picture (gross I know & I'm sorry) but I anyone has ha a similar experience I'd love to hear from you!

I had a similar little hole from where my drain was. It didn't close for about 3 weeks. I didn't worry about it, I just let Water run over it when I showered, and left it uncovered also. It healed on it's own.

I am 3-1/2 wks Post- Op and have the very same issue..Please see my question i sent to my Bariatric Dr. and his response in an email note this last week...

1. One of the sites was where the Gall Bladder was removed, was wondering

if this was Normal? The two sites I am questioning have very little

drainage thus far I am keeping the sites clean and dry...

His answer: . It is normal to have some leakage out of the sites. Sometimes a pocket of Fluid collects under the incision called a Seroma. The drainage would be a greasy yellowish/orangish/bloody tinge to it and be oily. Just with clean hands express around the incision site and try to get it out squeeze out. Of course if it turns green and stinky puss, that's another story, it should be looked at.

Great thanks guys! I have been taking pictures of it every couple of days to compare. It seems to be closing up... Slowly. Very slowly. I will keep a close eye on it! :)

That looks like the wound dehisced (sutures came apart) which is quite common. It will just heal from the inside out. If it isn't red, hard, or swollen just keep it clean and dry and it should heal up.

My drain site looks the same way.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
