Everything tastes bland / Aversion to food

Recommended Posts

I'm in my 6th week post-op and I am finding everything tastes bland or "off". I keep trying different things but after a few small bites I just cannot go anymore-- it's not just a full feeling -- it's a "ugh" feeling. It's like I just can't stand the thought of eating it. I keep wondering if it were my favorite pre-surgery foods like steak would I feel the same way. NOTHING appeals to me. The only way I am getting real calories in is from my Protein shakes....(which are also the easiest thing for me to get down)

I am also having a hard time getting water/flavored Water down. Makes me slightly nauseous almost every time.

How many calories are ya'll getting in around 6-8 weeks out? Of course, MyFitnessPal keeps warning me that my calories are way too low and my body will go into starvation mode...

Hey Dana, my nut said to stick with 700 calories a day until I see her again in April. I was sleeved 2 days before you, so we should be on the same stage....depending on our Dr's I guess. Have you tried warm Decaf tea or coffee? Maybe those will sit better in your stomach. I myself haven't had any problem with anything so far, I've been lucky I guess. As far as foods go, I need to spice mine up quite a bit more than I used to....change of taste buds I guess.

I am kind of the same way. I was sleeved 12/20 and eating is no longer an enjoyable experience, it seems like another chore. I do eat and keep food down, it just isn't enjoyable anymore.

I had the same problem food tasted off or blah to me. My mother suggested it may be due to the anesthesia. I don't know if she was right but I am at the end of week 7 now and my taste buds seem to be coming back alive a bit.

Hi Traci,

Calories are another thing that seem to be all over the map with everybody. I've been sticking to around 900-800 a day. But some people are posting that their doc has them on 300 calories 6 weeks out?? Some people are doing 500, some are doing 1200. My doc/nutritionist did not give any actual calorie guidelines, which I find kind of ridiculous. Their instructions say "if you are not hungry don't eat. Concentrate on fluids and protein" Well, if I waited until I was hungry I would never eat.

I guess it's just individual trial and error on this journey...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
