How long did you take pain meds after your surgery?

Recommended Posts

I had my VSG on Monday, January 21st and I was wondering how long most people stayed on pain meds? I spoke to a friend of mine who said he only needed them for the first day. I'm usually pretty tough when it comes to pain, I've had 2 c-sections, gall bladder surgery, sinus surgery etc. But, this is day 6 and although I feel fine part of the day, then I start having these stinging, stabbing pains in near my large incision and take a pain pill. I also started having muscle spasms near this area today as well. And what has your doctor suggested as a sleep aid? Thanks!

I was hurting for about 6 days after surgery, but only took meds for 1 day after I was home. My doc gave me some liquid pain meds and it tasted so horrible I would rather deal with the pain. I kept the big elastic pressure wrap on my belly for 9 days to protect my incisions from being stretched.

My doc didn't suggest any sleep aids, but I was able to take Melatonin and the Walmart brand sleep aid gel pills as I needed them.

I probably took them for about a week to help me sleep.< /p>

I had my surgery on Tuesday and was thinking about stopping them today but changed my mind and think I will take another dose before bed. I am still having pain in the incision site. Because they have the side effect of being constipating I should stop before I have issues in that area.

I received liquid pain med too...but never even opened the bottle. I actually had no pain. But everyone's body is different so I say as long as you have pain take the med.

I wish I had this belly sleeve two. As for pain meds just take as needed

You should be pretty close to stopping, but they do make it easier to

sleep:) They gave me the nasty liquid meds so I didn't touch them

after I got home.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
