BM questions-kind of embarrassed

Recommended Posts

Hi other sleevers! I had my surgery on the 22nd of Jan and for the most part feel great.

I have an embarrassing question to ask though.

I'm having a lot if loose bowl movements and I'm only having Water with a little Protein Water. (My dr has me on Clear liquids for a week)

I'm also having a hard time drinking the 60 oz of liquids. How do you do this?

Has anyone else experienced this? I just don't recall anyone saying this in class.

Thanks!

They have firmed up for me now although I have not had one in 3 days but no pain or discomfort or even the feeling I have to go. Since we are not eating solids yet and you just had GI surgery, your body needs to adjust.

As far as the liquids go, mix it up...add a squeeze from an orange or lime into your Water, get some good Soup with broth and strain out the other ingredients, I found it had more taste that just the broth in the box. Also switch between chicken, beef and veggie broth and don't forget about the other clear liquids...for me my treat was apple juice!

Hi there!

First...congratulations!

And...liquids in = liquids out. It's perfectly normal. Now, there comes a point where 'excessive' is no good. Stay hydrated!

It's hard to get in all of your liquid. My doctor just indicated to me,"if 32 ozs was your normal pre-surgery, then start there." It really made it easier for me. It does get easier with each day to get it in. I'm only 15 days post-op and I can now get my water in. Not every single day, but 90% of the time.

Hope this helps, and when in doubt, contact your doctors office to find out how much 'excessive' is.

Good luck on your journey. :)

I had diarrhea the whole time I was on liquids. I read on one of these forums something about "liquids in, liquids out." It is what it is. Once you start eating solids it should subside.

As for the Water, I count my two Premier Protein shakes as Water intake, so I try to drink 3-4 bottles of water a day. One before Breakfast, one before lunch, and another before dinner. Then in the evening I try to get another one in if I am watching TV or something. I don't like plain water so I either add Mio or drink Propel. I would like to add in more water to my day though, but it is hard.

By the way, I only had about 2-3 "liquid" stools a day for several days and then it stopped and firmed up. I thought it might be because of the bowel prep preop I took. But when you say frequent....what does that mean? Because if someone is having like 7 loose stools a day, they are risking dehydration and need to talk to their doc

Perfectly normal. You really don't have anything in you, so in one end, out the other. It will solidify as you move on to puree and soft foods, then you will have quite the opposite problem once you go to solid Proteins. The way I got my liquids in is I always carried something with me and just made myself sip it every 5 minutes. Also, I found warm or hot liquids much easier to stomach at that stage than cold. Good luck!

OMG... please know that it WILL change... but be careful that you're staying hydrated... but enjoy the go... because sometimes, I can't...unassisted... I know, TMI!! I am 7 wks out and things have truly changed... trying to find a balance at this point...

I had my surgery on the 22nd also and I have had the opposite problem I haven't gone for over a week. I haven't had any discomfort from it yet but I am worried I will soon. My diet is different than most as I have three double milks a day That is skim milk with sugar free instant Breakfast or dry milk mixed with it. They do not want us to use Protein Powder at all and I am okay with that. I have been eating alot of sugarfree popsicles and that helps with getting liquids in..

Hi everyone. I was sleeved on 1/18/12 - just over a year ago and I went thru the same problem with diarrhea. I found the solution from reading this forum. I took two capsules of a probiotic called Culturelle. I worked almost immediately. Nothing else I tried stopped the big D! Problem solved.

Hope this helps.

I should have updated my ticker prior to answering your question because my weight didn't reflect the update after I posted. I'm down 65 lbs now. Funny how I've become so vain about my weight!!

Yep, it's normal. I had the same issue even after I was on solids. It was about 4 weeks for me...now it's gone the other way a little! I'm not sure why, but this is not something you hear as much about as Constipation, but this too, shall pass (pun intended). :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
