Diabetes for more than 5 years

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I started the process for the sleeve, but like everyone else here at one time or another i have doubts. I want to shed the pounds and be healthier, but my main goal is to get rid of or reduce my dependence on diabetes meds and insulin. Has anyone here had diabetes for a long time and got improvement after the surgery?

I would love to hear some diabetes related success/disappointments stories so that I can better set my expectations.

Jeremy

Jeremy

i was diagnosed with diabetes 20 years preWLS - few years ago had to add insulin with my meds

my surgeon "warned" me that the longer you have had diabetes, its possible that you WON"T improve :( but.......20 years since diabetes diangosis...........

shortly after WLS- post op NO more diabetes!!! (remission)

"most" people do lose or improve their diabetes situation - at only 5 years, "probably" you will lose your diabetes (fingers crossed)

i agree that the health issue of diabetes is one of the main health issues that push people towards having WLS (it was for me)

your "doubts" are normal - but..............having this WLS will be the best thing you have every done for yourself, except for a few people, most will agree how wonderful the sleeve is

don't second guess your wise decision to have the WLS - you are a smart looking person ;)

you will lose the weight, become much healthier and happier too!!

good luck

speedy recover

I too had the sleeve to help me with diabeties. I was diabetic for 25 years... on metform with glyburide. Two pills in morning and 2 pills at night. I was also on 80 units of insulin at bed time and still was not controlled. I had the operation on Jan11th and I am on 1 metformin a day and insulin 20 units at night. I expect when I lose a few more pounds I will be off the insulin for sure and may not take the metformin-glyburide. I have lost a total of 32 pounds between preop and now 1/26. Best thing I ever did for my health. I hope the best for you.

I got it for the same purpose I was a diabetic for 7 plus years that i am aware of.my surgery was on 8 th jan 2013 I was taking insulin shots twice a day along with metform ,BP and cholesterol meds I stopped taking insulin metform &BP meds right away because my sugar is 120 after food and BP normal the only pill I am taking is Crestor for cholesterol and my doctor think I won't have to even take that once I get my bloodwork done which will be 90 days post surgery. I check it everyday and its stable usually type 2 is because of extra weight and once you start losing weight it an instant impact I am 6 ft was 285 lbs lost 30 lbs and stopped insulin

I've been diabetic for about 15 years and take 6 different meds!!!!!!! I take 1000 er metformin, Amaryl, Actos, victoza, Lantus and benicar! I don't have hbp, but take it to protect kidneys. I also have ankylosing spondylitis and sjogrens syndrome. I have to have sleeve because of the latter 2. I am hoping the surgery will help with the pain ans fatigue that accompany them too. I don't expect great miracles with the autoimmune diseases, but less weight can't hurt! I turned 50 this week so I've been diabetic from an early age ans have not done well on controlling the way I should. I lost 60 lbs about 5 years ago and could see a huge difference in sugar control.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
