Anyone else experience a fast heart rate (100 and up) after surgery? I'm close to two weeks out.

I am four days out from surgery and have to take my pulse and heart rate twice a day. If my pulse is over 110 or temperature is over 100.5 I am suppose to call in as it could b a sign of a leak.I would keep checking it and if it get over 110 I would give them a call. Do you have a Temperature?

this is one of the signs of a leak, if it is higher than what is normal I would call your doctor. Other signs include fever abdominal pain.

Hope its not good luck to you

My surgeon was the one who caught it on Tuesday when it went from 120 to 140. But other than this, everything looks great. No pain, no fever, nothing! Even he is baffled, I had an EKG Tuesday that was normal except my heart rate.

Has your surgeon done a leak test?

Yes, I had a leak test the day after surgery.

My pulse was recorded at 100 this last Tuesday, but probably because I have been battling one heck of a flu this week. Typically, my resting heart rate is between 50 and 60 so 100 really surprised me.

This is alarming to me because when I was monitored in the hospital, my heart rate was in the 70 to 80 range. Even when I was in pain!

Leaks can happen several weeks out so may want to rule that out again.

However, increased heart rates and arrhythmias may occur after any surgery. It also can be a reaction to any medication, pain relievers and sometimes even Vitamins. I go berserk with PSEs (I have a mild arrhythmia).

Periodic racing and short-term arrhythmias are usually nothing to worry about. If your pulse is a constant 100 you may want the cardiologist to check that out. Or the skips/flutters last for several minutes followed by any feeling of faintness that's something to be concerned about (my PCP just reminded me of this today).

If it's normal most of the time then occasionally races, that could just be after effect of surgery and should settle down.

Sounds like u r dehydrated. Dehydration can cause an elevated heart rate. This something that can easily happen after surgery.

Maybe, but I've been getting plenty of fluids everyday.

Do you have thyroid issues? High pulse is one of the side issues. Mine ranges 90-120 on a normal day.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
