Tastebuds

Recommended Posts

Since having the band my taste buds have really changed. I no longer can drink Tim Hortons coffee. I could become a vegetarian. Could care less about meat.I might eat meat 1 or twice a week. I eat Protein by eggs ,cheese string ,peanut butter. I am nervous to eat green salad. Afraid i can't chew it good.Anybody else experiencing this ?

Yes! Things I used to love don't appeal to me nearly as much. I'm loving that, since it includes things like candy and Cookies. I'm enjoying fruits and veggies so much more. I've always liked fish and chicken.< /p>

I don't know if it is something you want to "fix" or not! My Dr. advised me to take 2 Tums at night to help with acid and to help with Calcium. Lo and behold it was the Tums making everything tast wierd to me!! I changed to Viactiv, and no more metallic taste, and I like my food again!!!

Now if I would have eaten healthy when it all tasted bad, I may not have been eager to fix it!!

I have gotten out of my habit of eating lots of carbs. This is a good thing. The carb thing was a serious addiction. Unfortunately I am eating fewer vegies. I am afraid that they will get caught on the band and my favourite way of eating them was by mixing 'em up with carbs and cheese. Mmmm. I am still trying to figure out an answer to the vegie dilemna.

Hmmm, not hugely but some things have gone by the wayside. I cant handle as much rich food anymore, that's probably not due to the band itself but simply due to the fact that I've eaten so much less for the past year.

And milky coffees - cappucinos and lattes etc which were a serious addiction for me, make me nauseous now, I cant handle warm milk, ergh. I always have a long black or simply a brewed coffee with a dash of cold milk now. I never liked my coffee sweet but I just dont like the milk anymore.

I was a coffeeholic. Now, I still love the aroma of fresh brewed coffee....but unless its a capuccino, I really don't desire it. I use to munch on raw veggies but can't do it any more. Can eat any cooked veg but just can't do the raw thing, hurts too much.....that's not really a "tastebud" change.

Green: for the first while I pureed my veggies....a little chicken stock with cauliflower, carrots, broccoli, etc makes a nice and tasty mash. Eventually I was able to eat any veg without mashing them but I do have to chew them very well....like all other food.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
