5 days out and have a small issue

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I had my surgery on Monday Jan. 21st. weight before surgery was 344lbs and starting over all weight was 360lb.

Had my first Protein Drink today and that helped a lot and was so good. hope things get easier from here.

The one thing I am having trouble with and would like to see if anyone else had the same problem. I am having issues watching tv. All the fast food commercials and other food commercials are just making me upset i guess I can say. It's like that looks really good and ill never be able to have it again. not sure if its a stage a lot of people go through but seems like that's my biggest thing at the moment.

Everything else has been going great. going to head to the mall and walk around a bit today. maybe spend some money on stuff i don't need to boost my spirits. lol

Thanks,

John

HI John! Congratulations on your surgery!!

Your post made me remember the first weekend I was home after surgery. It seemed all there was on TV was food commercials. I thought to myself it was funny since I don't remember noticing them before. I think it is a head game we play with ourselves.

If the TV is bothering you, DVR your shows and fast forward through the commercials until you are a little further out, watch a movie with no commercials for a while.

The beauty of the sleeve is once we are all healed, there are no "never haves" in our lives, just what we choose to have to promote our weight loss and continued good health. I love that I'm not craving sugar or carbs and that I can find satisfaction in healthy choices.

If you need distractions, start a list of sleeve friendly recipes you want to try when you're on mushies and beyond. When you are physically ready, have healthy alternatives handy so you don't feel the need to snack on foods that will compromise your progress. These first few weeks will go quickly. Going to the mall to walk around is a good choice, window shop for all the new items you'll be purchasing when your current clothes no longer fit!

Good luck!!

food commercials making me upset

hi newbie

glad to hear things are going well :)

i DVR all tv - HATE ALL COMMERCIALS

when a commercial starts to air (food et al) i fast forward - that gets rid of my issues :)

or, you could get up and walk for a couple of minutes during the dreaded commercial - walking is always good exercise ;)

take care

It's normal to have emotions when you see food you enjoy. I have had my own mourning so to speak for food that can't be in my new life style. No foods are off limits forever but we would not need WLS if we could stay away from the foods that got us to this point. I have gotten to where I leave the room when food commercials are on or change the channel. It gets better:)

Dear John,

I went through this also. It was painfull. The trutth of the matter is that you will be able to eat anything you want again the main difference is the quantity and your bite size. Before this surgery I could eat about 7 slices of pizza , at 5 weeks post op I can eat only 1 without the crust . Dont get down about it the time will pass and you will be able to enjoy the foods you love. My only caution is that when you can dont make it a everyday thing. Good luck and hang in there

I think this is completely normal. I, too, went through a mourning period thinking of not being able to gorge like I used to. I got so much satisfaction at Thanksgiving (and many other meals) having huge portions of Turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, rolls and all the accessories with pies and everything. Then 3 hours later, pulling everything out of the fridge and doing it all again. Loved it.

Going into my first Thanksgiving post-sleeve in 2011, I wondered how I was going to do it. All I could think about was what I couldn't eat. What I wasn't going to enjoy. So sad. But, I made it through.

What I began to notice, though after, was not what I was not able to eat, but what I was able to eat. I found such great satisfaction that I didn't have to gorge in order to feel satiety. I began to look around at what everyone else was eating and the portions and began to smile thinking, "I don't have to do that anymore. I am free of that 1,000 pound gorilla on my back."

This past Christmas, I watched as the fellow across from me filled his plate 3 times and couldn't move later on when I was running around playing ping-pong and playing with the kids. Given the choice of who's shoes I would rather be in, I would now choose mine. I was able to enjoy my dinner and everything after.

It will take some time, but as long as you follow the guidelines and try not to obsess on what you can't do, but rather on what you can, you will be fine.

This, too, shall pass.

I can definitely relate to this now. I had my surgery 1-15-13 and although I'm glad I made the decision, it's hard to be around my husband who is grilling burgers as I'm writing this.

I did this for a life style change but the lack of calories each day is starting to bother me. I know I need to find a tolerable Protein Powder but don't know what to try. I also feel kind of alone through this whole thing since I don't have anyone to talk to about feelings and emotions. Thank God for this forum.

What were other people eating 10 days out? Still on my full liquid diet.< /p>

The first week post op, I noticed it. It seemed that everything was a food commercial. Now it isn't a big deal at all. It also gave me some perspective on my relationship with food. I think that many of us, have the same unhealthy relationships and that seeing food triggers things within us that we need to learn to deal with. Seeing these commercials now have actually helped in that respect. We (I) have to face what our demons are. This surgery gives us that opportunity. Sure you can eat what ever you want in time, but you also have the opportunity to make real changes in your life and that's the approach that I decided to take. It won't work for everyone, and that's fine, but for me, there's not one thing that I could put in my mouth right now that is worth more than what I hope to achieve with this surgery. I think that once you have been able to so some real self evaluating of where you are, and how you got to that point, the food commercials won't be a big deal. Hang tough, it is all good in the end :)

It gets better, I promise! I felt the same way pre op and for the first month post op. Now, it just makes me sick to see all the food on tv. I usually watch tv after dinner when I'm full off of a small amount of food!

I was sleeved 1/21 too and I'm struggling with he same thing. I want every food I see...anywhere! TV, billboards, other people's plates lol. I hope it does get better too. I just want to get to the stage where I can actually chew the food.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
