Afraid of losing weight before I get insurance approval

Recommended Posts

The Nut told me I cannot lose any weight or I jeopardize getting approved. My bmi is exactly 35. If I drop just a few pounds I'll be below the BMI requirement. Anyone else facing this? I wasn't losing weight before I decided to get the sleeve. I dont want to put this off another minute than I have to. Any advice?

I was told the same thing by the doctor at the clinic. It's the "dance with the insurance company." My BMI is currently 35.1 because I had a bad case of diverticulitis and was hospitalized for 7 days on ice chips for 6 days and Clear Liquids for one - just prior to my first appointment. So what I did was go to my primary care physician (who I see every 90 days) and have them print out my weight and BMI's for the past 2 years. I gave the clinic the copy. The advice was to not lose any more - but try to eat healthier.Hope that helps :)

I'm in the same situation exactly except my BMI is 40.2 --- If I drop below 40 with no comorbidities my insurance will not approve, and I believe my surgeon would also not proceed.

It is tough, and it's kind of a mind f**k because having struggled with my weight all these decades now I want to maintain?? So I can stay above a particular number? So that I can eventually have the tool I need to start working my way to the lower numbers and a healthier life? My mind is made up to have surgery and get healthy, but I've got to try to maintain this weight for now at least? It is pretty ridiculous that they do it this way imo. But oh well.

The only thing I can do is stay positive, try to maintain to meet their requirements, and look at the big picture and where I'll be a year from now (and the rest of my life).

I'm also not above eating some really salty things the day before weigh in ;)

I didn't have this problem  but the nutritionist I saw did tell that she's had to tell some patients that they CANNOT lose any weight during the three month dietary visits.

I am 34.4 and with my insurance company, the lowest BMI you can have is 35 with two cormorbities. I'm trying to revise to the sleeve.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
