Pre-op diet... how to deal with others in the house?

Recommended Posts

My teenager just came into my office and ate a piece of toast and nutella. I'm afraid I bit his head off when I told him he cannot eat that around me again today. I'm emotional and pissy and fearing I can't do this.

How are you or did you get through it when there's others in your home not so restricted?

They eat what the people in the house who have had most of their stomachs removed eat :) ala lean Protein, veggies, occasional fruits in seaon, nuts, cheese, dairy, etc. If they want something that involves processed carbs - they go out for it.

The house is clean - it has to be...a loaf of bread might as well a heroin filled syringe lol.

Hang in there - pre-op diet is rough. My surgeon had us do Atkins induction which shrinks the liver just fine. I would make everyone eat away from me - plug my nose and if anyone wants bad food have them eat it elsewhere. For me controlling the food in my environment is KEY.

LOL! We all have our weaknesses! For me it is potato anything now! chips, french fries, tator tots, keep them away!! During my pre-op I made my husband eat away from home. He was delighted to have fast food every night for about the first week, by the time surgery rolled around he was sick of it, so it did some good, he doesn't want fast food now after a month long binge, and I can't so things are working out well!!

I started my pre-op early (WHAT was I THINKING?!?) and the first week was a breeze, now in coming up on week two I'm ready to walk 4 miles in to town for a cheeseburger and some fries, with a nice sugary doughnut to chase it down!! OH MAN!! I've been in the kitchen so many times, open the fridge...stare. Close the fridge...frown. Open the cabinet...stare. Slam the cabinet! Open the pantry....stare......groan out loud!! I've been a basket case today with cravings!! Got.....to.....hold......out!! :(

My surgery is feb 18 too. I'm impressed that you started your pre op diet early. My pre op starts feb 11. I thought about starting early, but I just keep putting it off (story of my life). So yeah, I'm still eating those cheeseburgers, fries, and donuts ;) But not for long!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
