Is this normal???

Hi Everyone,

I had my surgery last thursday, 11/2. Since then, I've had all the expected pain around incisions and LOTS of gas and pain from that, but I have been unable to really get down much of the prescribed liquids on the 2 week post-op diet. I've probably had 1 mug of strained Soup, a few SF popsicles and half a Protein Shake. Forget about trying to get to 70 grams of Protein per day. The thought of food just turns my stomach. Did you all experience the same thing? I'm a little worried because I know this is not sustainable and there could be adverse affects of this. How long did it take your appetite to come back?

I never thought in a million years that the thought of food would actually be a turn off!

I wasn't hungry for 3-4 weeks. Food just held no interst for me. About 4 weeks out, I would get a little hungry, not much. By 6 weeks out, I was feeling more normal, but I never have been hungry like I was pre-surgery. For which I am VERY thankful.

Thanks for your replies---it really helps a lot to know that I'm not "alone!"

I had my first check up this past Friday and they were a little concerned about my nausea and were afraid that I was getting dehydrated. They STRONGLY suggested that I get some Isopure , which I did. Still no real appetite and still pretty sore but getting around much better. I do know I tend to get nauseous with anesthesia but they gave me something in the IV for that. Anyway, at least I'm off the nausea meds now and am going back to work on Monday.

Thanks again for all your help. I love this board!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
