Anyone out there an RN?

Recommended Posts

If you are a bedside nurse, wondering how long before you went back to work. Worried about being on my feet for 12 hours as well and the physicality of the job post op. Thoughts?

I say if you have the time take 6 weeks. I figured I would need to recover not only physically but get on a schedule as far as

fluids and Proteins. However I have heard of people returning much sooner.

I was pretty tired, though! I think 2 weeks would've been better.

I work on a Cardiac Tele unit and am going back to work tomorrow. I work two 12 hr shifts and one 8 hour shift. I had my surgery on January 9th. My doc recommended at least 2 weeks off i would have liked to take more just because its nice being off with my kids but can't really afford to do it ( I used all my time when I had my son in February ) .. Physically I feel great though and ready to go back actually. I'm just on restrictions for lifting more than 25lbs until 6 weeks post op.

I was sleeved on Thursday and went back to work the next Thursday. Work ICU so had to call in some favors with rolling help but I had no problems at all. It was nice to get back to the grind n not be stuck at home.

GI RN, hospital requires being able to lift 50 lbs and do CPR, so surgeon said 6 weeks :(. 3 weeks would have been perfect to me.

RN. Sleeved Jan 9, 2013. Back to work 14 days post op, this Wed! I think it was enough. Body's sore (back mainly) but its because I did nothing but sleep during recovery @ home. I work 12 hr shifts 3Xwk. It's a task to remind yourself to drink Water & eat every 2-3hrs, but it's definitely doable! For some reason I got my menses a whole week early too :/ not cool.

I was thinking 3 weeks and I could always go back before if I felt okay. Just trying to plan vacation/sick time.

Where are you all from? Any regrets about having the surgery? I am waiting to hear back from my insurance company so haven't made a final decision. I am just terrifed that something would go wrong and I would really mess myself up. Other than being overweight, I have no health issues. But sick and tired of dieting and gaining the weight back.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
