I'm 10 days post op and I'm HUNGRY! Is this normal?

I'm on full liquids this week, I've had yogurt, apple sauce, Soup, Protein Shakes throughout today...still hungry, so I scrambled an egg and mashed it to applesauce consistency and I'm somewhat satisfied but afraid that i may mess something up? Help?

I would guess that apple sauce, Soup, yoghurt have at least 50% carb content? Carbs will make you hungry. Can you try packing in more Protein somehow? Jello protein, broth with lots of protein (carb and calorie content is small), eggs are GREAT, have 2! I got the protein cheese sauce from Unjury and plan on having eggs, smoked salmon + cheese sauce for breaky on weekends. Or poached fish with cheese sauce over it. Keep the protein and Water high and carbs low, it's the carbs that increase your appetite. Good luck tata.

I am 7 days post op, and I started getting insanely hungry around 4 days post op. One of the nurses at the hospital I stayed called to check on me, and she explained to me that it was "head hunger". I don't know what that means since the feeling is clearly in my stomach. She also said to make sure I am getting in my Protein, since it works well with reducing hunger.

When I told my doctor of the hunger yesterday at my 1 week post op visit, he said to me that it is normal, and it will pass. You have to let your hormones adjust to the fact that you have a new stomach. He also told me to take my mind off of it, and just to go home and focus on losing as much weight as possible.

Thanks Guys!

I thought my surgeon made a mistake with me?

The first few days I was not hungry at all, this past week has been tougher than the pre-op diet.

Great advise, Protein shake for dinner, although I've already had two in addition to all the other "stuff"

I don't want to stretch my new stomach or damage anything.

Protein helps. I started my full liquids w/a "starter" Protein Shake - Carnation Breakfast Drink packets come in multi flavor, arent' too thick, taste decent and have lower carb/sugar. It's thick enough to make you feel full and hold you until your next meal time...Jello sugar free pudding is also a thicker consistency to help make you feel fuller. It was trial/error for my first 2wks on full liquids.

This could be hormones left over or it can be that you are getting in foods that don't give you much of a full feeling. Either way, it will pass and soon the foods you eat will be more solid and your body won't be able to metabolize them as quickly. You will feel full and might even feel hungry at all. :) You may also benefit from checking with your surgeon about taking a PPI which is nexium, omeprazole, tums, etc. :D

Wow...u make an interesting point about the correlation between density of foods and fullness. Great post!

Hi. I went thru that too about that time. I agree with the other posts also and think also that along with the head hunger at the days pistol you stated you are beginning to get over the surgery, anesthesia, and post op pain if you had any and naturally feel more like eating and more interested in food. Just being human and it's understandable. Also, if you are home and bored you tend to be more inclined to think with your "head" hunger. Don't rush the diet phases though. My doc is real conservative. I also had hiatal hernia repair and had surgery 12/19. I am still on liquids until my next visit 1/31. It has been real thats for sure. Good luck!
