Carb question.

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I'm still pre op. don't have a date yet but hoping in February.

My question is about carbs. I know post op we should keep our carbs around 40-50. Does that include the carbs from fruit, veggies and non simple carbs? Or is it 40-50 from whole grains like whole wheat bread and oatmeals?

Thanks!

when I was first post op, most of the Protein Shakes and milk drinks had high carbs, but they were my only intake for 2weeks. Then it was low carb/no carb if possible. Protein intake first, then veggies/fruit. I'm usually too full to make all the veggies/fruit. Carb count EVERYTHING including fruit and veggies...some have high carb!!

That is a net carb count. So you'd need to know the net carb count on fruits.

Thanks everyone! I always thought you could have endless amounts of carbs if the came from fruits and veggies!

I'm glad I cleared that up ;)

I count everything as well. That said, I eat more Beans and veggies like broccoli on days I lift weights (the 2 meals post workout). To build muscle, that muscle needs slow digesting carbs just as much as it needs Protein. So I have as many veggie type carbs like broc and green beans as I want, with a lean protein on those workout days. I count them on those days, but I don't really limit the low glycemic carbs then, I just count them to compare my macros to my non-lifting days where I DO limit my carbs. Though I'm human, I try to avoid the simple carbs like sugary foods and drinks such as Gatorade unless I do some long insane cardio session and need it after that workout. This all works for me, but we are all so different metabolically, you may just need to find what works for you and go from there. And more than likely, when you do, your body will change.

Thanks for this! I'm really physically active. 6days cardio and 3-4 strength using my own weight like lunges, squats and push ups. 3 days out of the week I find myself furiously hungry. Those day i seek the white stuff (simple carbs) lol. I might need to stock up on those good carbs.

Thanks again!

I'd say double-check with your surgeon. My pre-op was under 30 grams, counting everything, including dairy, veggies, etc.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
