4 days post op, drinking too fast?

Recommended Posts

I had surgery on 1/18/13, and am doing very well. I seem to be tolerating liquids really well. I was reading in my post op manual that I am not supposed to be drinking more than 6 oz. in a 15 minute period. I have definitely been drinking 6 oz. faster than that without any ill effects. I will absolutely slow things down, but what is the harm if it isn't hurting me? Anyone else have this problem? It seems most people have the opposite problem.

I hope so, but it worries me a little. I certainly am not gulping, but I'm taking sips and not having to wait much time at all for the next sip. I just don't want to damage anything. I had around 8 oz. of chicken broth tonight at dinner and felt like I ate at a normal pace. It took me about 10 minutes to finish it.

Many have problems with liquids after surgey. You and I are lucky. I was concerned and talked to my doctor about it. He said not to gulp but otherwise drink away. That was 9 months ago. I have fantastic restriction with food but still can down 32 oz of liquid in no time at all. It helps me get in over 100 oz of Water, crystal light, tea a day which speeds up my weight loss. Follow your doctors orders or just call them and see if they are ok with drinking more. Best of luck...but it doesnt seem like you will need it!

The people who have a hard time getting there fluids in are usually because of still having a lot of swelling. I personally was like you and did not have problems drinking as much as I wanted, it didn't cause me any problems and made it much easier to get my necessary Proteins at that stage.

It's okay, be glad you're drinking well. You need 64 oz. per day. I'm able to drink crystal light peach iced tea like that - my first week out of surgery - it tasted like such a treat - I'm out of post op 1 month ago the 17 of jan

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
