Sleeve vs. Bypass? Decisions decisions

Recommended Posts

So I am all set for surgery. I'm self-pay and have set a date. My doctor has ruled out the band for me, and now I can't decide between the sleeve our the bypass. He says it can be a game day decision, but I want to start the decision process now. Any thoughts/ suggestions?

Personally, I went with the sleeve because I did not like the idea of my intestines being re routed. Also, from what I read, there seems to be less complications, less need for Vitamins long term, less issues with malabsorbtion and dumping. Also, with the sleeve, you can be revised to the by pass, or Dudial Switch at a later time if you feel it is not effective enough. I would discuss and research the pros and cons of both surgeries, and see what your surgeon suggests and why, but I am pretty sure most all of us here will be just a little more biased toward the sleeve ;) Good luck on your journey whatever you choose!

You're on VST - we are all biased. We will all tell you to get the sleeve. Haha.

For me it came down to two different experiences with 2 different weight loss drugs. Each were successful initially. The first just like the bypass I experienced dumping if I ate over 15g of fat per meal. It was horrible. However - some may like that side effect because it keeps them in check. I decided to discontinue with the drug as I hated the side effects even though it only very occasional.

Second drug I tried a few years after was an appetite reducer just like the sleeve ss it removes a lot of the hormone that tells your brain you're hungry. I couldn't fit much in and was never hungry. This was hugely successful and I kept the weight off until they took this drug off the market suddenly due to reported cases of heart attacks. I think I admitted defeat straight away rather than working to stay at that weight.

Not even 3 months out from being sleeved yet I can eat whatever I want in very small amounts. I have lost 55lbs or 25kg. I do not experience dumping. I wanted to live a life of moderation and normality. If you cannot stop at 1 cookie or 1 piece of chocolate then I would suggest the bypass to keep you in check.

At the end of the day you have to weigh up the pros and cons of both and choose the path that suits you best.

My Sis-n-law & 2 of my friends had the bypass & they all 3 have either nausea & vomiting, or dumping. That's why I chose the sleeve, & I have had no complications what-so-ever! I can eat anything I want, just small portions!

The sleeve puts fewer restrictions on you regarding what you can eat. This is good (we can eat what we want) and bad (we can eat what we want). Some people like the enforced restrictions caused by the bypass, as they don't trust themselves to eat right, and need the extra aversion theory.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
