Sugar contains a lot of empty calories, so the answer really lies within you. What are you willing to sacrifice for your weightloss? Early out, I couldn't tolerate anything too sugary. Just didn't taste good. Then, Halloween came around and I started to tolerate it more. I wish that never happened, but ... it is one of my weaknesses. But, I didn't get this surgery to cut out all of my vices, so, I am OK with that. Plus, I was exercising like crazy, so I could afford the extra calories.

If you decide to have sugar regularly in your diet, you forfeit the right to cry and moan about losing weight slower than you expect. If that is not OK with you, then you will need to cut out sugars as much as possible. It really is your journey and what your expectation are.

I would not do it for a little while but if you do do it, don't over do it. You maybe opening up a dam of chocolate lust and go berserk. But once in a while I don't think it's a problem. Hell I had a cookie for Christmas and it was yummy. And I'm 81 lbs down since surgery oct 31.

I'm a lil over 9 months out and I have lost 120 lbs.... I drink coffee with Creamer and splenda usually every day and enjoy a glass of red wine at least once per week. I've enjoyed fresh full sugar lemonade and iced tea on occasion but don't make it a habit. I've never been one to have a sweet tooth either but if I want something sweet I eat it! The difference is now I have CONTROL!!! Before I was sleeved I would eat 8 or 9 Oreos and today... maybe 1 or 2... The same with chocolate.. I have miniatures from Halloween still laying around and I will have a couple and there but nothing like before. Ice cream is the same.. Before my sleeve I could eat a large bowl. Now?? maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of a cup and am completely satisfied. But usually if I am craving something sweet I will eat a few slices of an apple with Peanut Butter or some yogurt.

In general... I can eat everything that I ate before my sleeve... except bananas.... they make me puke for whatever reason... LOL

Hope this helps! :)

One of the biggest post-surgery rules is "don't drink your calories". beverages pass right through the sleeve and if you're drinking a lot of calories, you're seriously sabotaging one of the biggest tools the sleeve provides for long term weight loss.

In moderation it's not a problem, but if you go back to the same behaviors you had pre-surgery, it's only going to hurt you in the long term.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
