Several months out- weird vertigo spells/equilibrium issues anyone?

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

Long story as short as I can make it: I got sleeved 16 months ago, my good friend got sleeved a year ago. After a camping trip in August, (both of us over 6 months out), that included heavy drinking, we both noticed that days later we incurred a feeling of vertigo that would come in waves. The feeling is almost like you are on a boat- not full on room spinning, but oddly off balance in a similar manner to when you are flying or on a boat.

We now both notice that 1-2 days after drinking alcohol, this happens again! Still!

I have ruled out B-12 deficiencies, Iron deficiencies, inner ear issues, and all my physical results test GREAT.

It's mysterious, but we both are affected by it similarly. I now sometimes get it if I am stressed, and odd things trigger the feeling like sitting at my computer, or eating.

Anyone else experience this?

**I am NOT talking about the first couple months where you may have low blood sugar from a calorie deficiency**

From Wikipedia: "

Stress-induced depression

The hormone might help defend against symptoms of stress-induced depression and anxiety.[38] To test whether ghrelin could regulate depressive symptoms brought on by chronic stress, the researchers subjected mice to daily bouts of social stress, using a standard laboratory technique that induces stress by exposing normal mice to very aggressive “bully” mice. Such animals have been shown to be good models for studying depression in humans. The researchers stressed both wild-type mice and altered mice that were unable to respond to ghrelin. They found that, after experiencing stress, both types of mice had significantly elevated levels of ghrelin that persisted at least four weeks after their last defeat encounter. The altered mice, however, displayed significantly greater social avoidance than their wild-type counterparts, indicating an exacerbation of depression-like symptoms. They also ate less than the wild-type mice.[39]

"

<- I am wondering if perhaps this indicates that ghrelin may play a role in managing anxiety, and this weird equilibrium sensation is a component of this. I am wondering if others have experienced this too.

This happened to a friend and they found her to be thiamine (b1) deficient

I've had a CBC test done which ruled out anemia of any kind, which I believe B1/thiamine deficiency is. Hope your friend is better now, did she have VSG?

Had some today, with a funny feeling in my stomach. Had been at the computer. Maybe not enough fluids, but.....they are not settling well. 10 weeks out today. \

No a CBC doesn't show thiamine deficiency. She has permanent damage since it took so long to find the cause. She had a sleeve and loves it

Did doctors give you the exceresizes to help with the vertigo?

I would check hydration levels and your blood pressure. Very low blood pressure can cause similar symptoms.

This has happened to me more times than I care to count, and when it does I drop 1-2lbs in a day. Normally it takes me 3-4 and sometimes even a week to lose that. So the only thing I can think of for me is that my body is being shocked by the weight loss??? I don't know..

Good to know, and thank you for sharing her experience!

I just got health insurance, so I am hoping to get a blood test to determine any deficiencies. I had a simple CBC and B12 test done

out of pocket, both came back fine so I thought I was out of the woods for any type of anemia.

Dehydration is hopefully the answer- I think I drink quite a bit of Water, but I could be wrong.

Glad to hear I am not the only one on this weird, rocky boat!

I've been having light headedness when I stand up too quickly. It only happens 2-3 times a day. It's rare enough that I forget about it until it hits me....lasts for maybe 3-4 seconds, light headed and dizzy. I went to the doctor last week and he took all my blood work, urine sample and they checked my blood pressure standing, sitting, lying down and swinging from a vine. It was always perfect. My heart rate however scared the doc so bad he personally called a cardiologist right then and convinced him to see me immediately. It was a consistent 42 BPM. They did 2 EKGs and didn't find anything. I go for an echocardiogram Friday and I get my blood work results Wednesday so I'll see what the deal is. I'm 8 months out and never drink alcohol and I feel great the rest of the time. The cardiologist says my heart is not having to work very hard to pump blood to my suddenly smaller body and that it should gradually pick up in time to normal levels. Nobody can say if my heart rate is even remotely related to the light headedness.

I would think that your low HR would cause some light-headedness. Since your pulse isn't getting blood pushed through the rest of your body at a normal rate you could notice that type of side effect. When your body is at rest (sleeping) your HR slows down since it doesn't need to get the blood to the rest of your body as quickly as if you were in motion.

I could be wrong but it seems a logical answer to your question. I hope you feel better! I'm dealing with the dizziness too. I'm going to pick up my fluids...maybe that will help.

I am glad I am not the only VSGer with dizziness here, but t's certainly no fun!

I asked my doctor today about doing a test for thiamine (B-1), he seemed baffled but said "I guess I can put that in there", LOL- so we shall see. I take it (B-1) in my daily supplement.

I notice drinking Water actually makes me MORE dizzy, which perhaps is a sign that I am actually dehydrated and my body is responding to it? I don't know, I will hopefully have some answers in a couple days.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
