Popcorn?

Recommended Posts

I am 5 weeks post-OP - will be 6 weeks when I go to the movies next week. My question is what about popcorn? I know it goes against the Protein first rule, but I'd love to have some movie theatre popcorn next week (hooray for the fact that ill save money since I wont even be able to finish a small!). What about the one hard/sharp part in the middle (not sure what its called?) is that a danger or can I just chew really well?

Also! So far 2 people have noticed my weight loss :D I've never been able to lose weight before so the comments/compliments are a new thing to me and feel so great!!

Thanks for any advice!

Hmmmm. I would be extremely cautious. There is nothing in my guidelines about popcorn but here is what I would do. I would break two rules because I would have something to drink with that. I would have ONE piece, chew it into oblivion, drink. My sleeve is tomorrow so I cant say much but when I had a lapband I could tell from the first bite if it was going to go down OK or not.

Thanks so much NurseGrace and laura-ven - I trust your advice! Maybe this time I will just mooch a few pieces from my movie buddy instead of getting my own... Ill go super slow and make sure it's ok!

Best of luck with your vsg!

It takes 6 - 8 weeks for your stomach to fully heal. Some will say hey, it's okay go for it, I did. Some people drink Soda and alcohol immediately too, but do you really want to take a chance? What you do with your body is your own thing, but I do want you to be fully informed. You think you won't be able to finish a small, but popcorn is a slider food. If you wanted to, I truly believe you could finish the entire Large bag at 5 weeks. Eating popcorn, does this mean you are going to buy a drink with it too? That will make the popcorn slide down so much easier. Popcorn melts in your mouth basically, the oils will lubricate it and you will basically have a clod of kernel and seeds in your tummy, but it won't make you full until you are way past a small bag and I truly believe you will easily be able to finish off the large popcorn. AMC's 16-cup large popcorn is 1,030 calories and 57 grams of saturated fat and 98 grams of carbohydates!! This is not taking into account any extra sodium or extra butter.

Popcorn doesn't take up much room in your stomach, you will feel no restrictions from eating it and you will be extremely surprised, you will suffer later for it most likely, but not while you are eating it.

If I were you, I would wait a few months out until you try the popcorn. At 6 weeks out, I was just allowed to get off full liquids, the restriction is never there for things like chips, popcorn etc. that's why you are suppose to be getting in your Proteins which will make you feel the restriction and the carbohydrates from a small bag of popcorn isn't going to make you feel the restriction.

In the end it's up to you to give yourself the time to heal. This isn't a diet, it's a way of life. When you are completely healed inside and you truly have the self-control you need to handle a slider food like popcorn, go for it.

I thought popcorn was the #1 thing NOT to eat until you are pretty much healed up. I can't have it until at least 8 weeks out.

O wow good to know. I love popcorn. That is my snack of choice. I have just made a mental note not to touch it for couple months.

Ok! Good to know! I will be bringing a Protein shake to the movies then and abstaining from the popcorn!

So far I've been really good at following the rules (although sometimes I find it hard to get all my Protein in because my appetite is just too small :(), so I don't want to fall off the wagon now! Seeing the weight come off is soooo worth the sacrifice!!!

Thanks so much for your advice! I do take it to heart and I like to err on the side of caution! Unfortunately popcorn was not in my nutrition booklet!

And MinaT - holy calories! I can't believe it!!! Everyone says popcorn is such a low calorie snack! I used to have Nooo problem downing a medium to myself :S Eegads!

My doctor said no seeds, nuts or popcorn for 6 months. I'm just starting my 5th month so I'll be looking forward to some nuts and seeds in about 2 months.

We don't have AMC's around here anymore. Cineplex kind of took over movies in Canada. We have frozen yogurt, nachos and cheese, New York fries and pizza pizza on top of the usual theatre food... I think the best thing for post-VSG would be the frozen yogurt, but I think I'll just sneak in a Protein shake or some other, more healthy snack.

I do drool a little every time I go by New York fries though :S wish I never got hooked on their veggie deluxe before surgery! It's so delish but so fatty and starchy :(

A slider is a food ( usually stuff that tastes good but is bad for you) that you can eat with no restriction in your tummy.. Proteins will fill up and you will feel the restriction but things like mashed potatoes, chips and such you will be able to eat more of without that " full feeling"

Cruel but true.

question is what about popcorn?

bethxxx

a slider food good down your system very easily, too easy. you can eat too much of it without feeling full. it "slides" down - later you might feel the repercutions of eating too much.

dr's give different responses regarding the eating of popcorn

my dr told me i could have popcorn 8 weeks after WLS

i don't go to the movies very often - when i do go, i will get a small popcorn - "usually" taking a long time to eat

in the one hr and 45 minute movie i usually will have eaten all the popcorn - um um good :)

check with your dr/NUT for his instructions :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
