Black Women Lose Weight Slower...

Recommended Posts

My Doc told me that Black women who've had WLS (and in general) tend to lose weight slower than any other demographic...has anyone found this to be true from their own experiences?

I was told by my surgeon and the nutritionist that it depends on the amount of exercise you get in. They instructed me that if I feel like I am stalled then bump up my exercise regimine and this will help. I found this to be true. However I am at the stage I need to tone and strengthen. I have met my goal. I wanted to be in a size 14 and now I am. I need to tone more than lose now.

I was sleeved 3-18-13 and I was 258 the day of surgery and 237 as of 4-20-13. So that's 21lbs in a month I don't think that's slow and so far I have exercised 3 times.

If you go to the slow loser board you'll see the majority of people are White so I think it depends on how you eat afterwards more than race but what do I know? I'm freaking out and might never get sleeved.

I haven't heard of that. I was a slow looser. But I'm still loosing at 9 1/2 months out. So I'm steadily loosing weight. Be encouraged the sleeve surgery works

And is not specific.

Good luck

I agree it is slower. I watch a lot of weight loss shows, such as biggest loser and black people are never as successful as others. I would love for someone to investigate this topic. Also, I think we carry weight differently. Another race at 180lbs looks super obese while we can look kind of fit.

Slower losing may be an advantage - skin may adjust better. ;-)

In regards to our nutrition, I was told by a bariatric surgeon that we all know certain carbs aren't good, but even an extremely small portion can be detrimental. Not only can it make the body store it to turn to fat, but it can make the body store anything that comes behind it store as fat (carb or not). That pesky Pasta, bread and rice!

why are we always looking for something to feel inferior about ? Geesh …… if we do the program we will lose like anybody else,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Don't we already have enough of REAL inconsistencies to look for more?????

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
