When I had my preop consults they were mostly about preparing me mentally for the changes to life that the surgery was going to cause. Basically they explained what I would need to do postop and made sure I was prepared and committed to fallow through with it. Good Luck.

Its basically a baseline to see where you are at. They educate you on the changes and make sure mentally, and medically, this surgery is something you can withstand.

At this initial consult, they wont book you for a surgery date. You will be mandated to do 4 group therapy sessions and booked with a follow up with the nurse practioner again. Its usually at that month follow up, to see what changes you have made to prepare for the lifestyle change, that they go ahead and put thru the paperwork.

Good luck! It will be worth it!!

I know I have to pay the first payment of $300 at the first appointment so I would say be prepared to pay it. It covers they physch, nut and everything else. My insurance company pays 100% too BUT they don't pay for the program expense....I guess it depends on your doctor. Thanks for sharing Reneetrom! I was wondering how it went from the first appointment. Now I can be a little more at ease!!

Yeah, its very straight forward!! And very informative. Call your insurance company ahead of time just to make sure you wont owe a payment when you get there.

Good luck to you all!!

This is what happened, I met with the nurse first and she went over some things on my application, a few things on nutrition, and complications. Then I met with the psychologist, she looked over my app and asked me a few questions and then said she approved me. Then I spoke with the dietician, she went over what I can eat for the first few weeks. The program fee allows me to keep in touch with the dietician and the counselor for lifetime, no extra fees.

Yes, insurance typically covers all those costs. To see what costs you may incure, if any, for surgery.....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
