Just starting my journey!

Recommended Posts

I met with the surgeons office 1/18/13, after considering wls for the past 5+ years. The director gave me more hope than any other diet I have ever tried. (And I have been dieting since I was 10!) I am excited about the surgery, but I have a mandatory six month supervised diet requirement. I am a bit disappointed but I've done it this long, six more months won't kill me ;) I have been lurking around this site for 6 months and thought its time to speak out and join the ranks. Everyones story's, good and scary, have helped me make this decision, and I have a feeling I'm gonna need support from you all more than I know at the moment. Thanks for sharing everyone!

Welcome! I'm new to posting also, but like you, I've been a longtime lurker. After years of consideration, I'm finally taking the plunge and having my surgery done on March 8th in Cancun with Dr. Perez. I wish you the best of luck as you begin your journey! I think we can all be a great support system for one another. :)

Hi Mel! I am doing well...down 32 pounds so far and still "enjoying" my puréed foods phase. Overall I feel good, and happy, and excited about my new life. I still need to write about my experience in Mexico and share it on here...but I had a great one, and I wouldn't have traded it for anything.

First of all, congrats! When you're in the hospital, get up and start walking as soon as you can after surgery. It will help immensely with the gas pains. Everyone says you should bring gas-x strips, but to be honest, I had them with me and only used one (which didn't seem to help)...my mouth was much too dry for it to even dissolve on my tongue! If you tend to get nauseous from anesthesia and/or pain meds, let the nurses know prior to your surgery so they can start pumping in the anti-nausea meds as needed. I was never nauseous after surgery and didnt have a single vomiting incident...I'm sure the meds are what helped. Other than that, just try to relax and recover and follow all your doctor's orders! I hope all goes well for you...you must be so excited! :)

Yea!! Another date buddy!! I have been doing a preop diet for a couple of months now. It's not like the ones I hear others talk about though. It's just common sense eating and tracking of food and calories. I don't have to do a liquid diet until the day or two before.

Going to Kaiser. You??

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
