The five week funk

Recommended Posts

Like the topic says, I am five weeks out from surgery tomorrow and in a bit of a funk. I have heard that this is normal, but ugh! It sucks! I am on a regular diet with a few exceptions, and I am starting to realize a few things. I really feel like it is part of the process, but it sucks! Obviously, before surgery I really enjoyed food- too much. I don't or can't enjoy it anymore, because 1) I can't really eat but a few bites 2) it just doesn't taste like it did before 3) I just not hungry like ever 4) instead of an enjoyable activity, it has become a chore. In other words, my sleeve is working perfectly, but it's not happy-happy-joy-joy. Most of the time I think I could just not eat and be perfectly happy. I force it down five times a day because obviously not doing so would really compromise my health. I get the feeling that my thoughts are all the result of my "divorce" from food, but again, IT SUCKS! Sorry to rant, but I am hoping someone out there can relate. I am actually calling the therapist I saw before surgery tomorrow to make an appointment. I feel I need it. Thanks for reading. Sometimes you just need to get it out.

Oh, I am also in a stall (for a week) and so that's not making me feel any better. I am having to force food I don't like down my gullet and there's been not much results in awhile.

I felt the same for the first 3 weeks post op now im doing better. To actually enjoy food I take tiny bites so I feel I have eaten allot and it takes longer so I can sit with family members and be done eating when they are and still consume a small amount. I dont know if this help but I hope you feel better :) good luck at the therapist.

Well, despite the stall and feeling irritable, your weight loss is fantastic!!! Nice job!

Thanks! I am trying to focus on the big picture- the weight represented on my ticker is from start to finish- it has taken me about a year altogether to lose 54 lbs- which actually I am proud of- 30 lbs pre-op, 24 lbs post-op.

I was thinking about posting something like that with the title "I hate eating", lol. Your list is just like mine, and you are right, our sleeves are working as designed. I am about 4 1/2 weeks out, and I feel like I might be starting to turn the corner. I'm starting to sort of like the fact that I don't care about food anymore...it's SO much better than the way it was....everything and every event revolved around food.< /p>

Congrats on your weight loss so far! Hope it gets easier for you.

From what I read from people who are much longer out, it does get easier and more 'normal' - just in smaller amounts. But I guess that's the destination. Keep your eye on the prize for the journey.

PS - Sorry you have the 'five week funk' I hate that you have it, but I love the subject title! :)

I love funk! ...........

Way to jazz it up Dean! I'm a month out & jealous that your not hungry (also of your wright loss!) I get very hungry every 3-4 hrs! I can only eat a small amount, but then I'm starving again! I still love food, just now enjoying trying different healthier options! My Sis-n-law had surgery over a yr ago, & assures me things get better...& she looks awesome!! Hang in there!!

The speed it comes off is different for everyone. I'm starting to slow a little now, which is ok. Blokes seem to lose it faster than girls. Being older than 40, like me, seems to slow it up as well.

What I've said before is - if it takes 6 months or 18 months to get to goal, in 5 years time when we're all still at goal will we care? :) :)

I was just telling my mom today that now I hate eating. Every time I eat it hurts cause i feel over full. I'm 3 weeks out tomorrow and tempted to go back to liquids. I'm keeping my portions under 1/4 cup and can't even finish that. So I can kinda relate to this post.

Mate I felt like that at about that time. Don't go back to liquids - you gotta eat! :)

My problem was not the amount, but how quickly I was eating. I've slowed it right down now and it has helped heaps. I take small bites and consciously put my cutlery down, and talk (once I finish chewing ;) )

Well our relationship with food got us here in the first place we should eat to live not the other way around I am very grateful for the surgery and the opportunity I have to spend my time doing better things than to just think about food :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
