Waking up with acid and vomiting mucus with blood

Recommended Posts

I cant imagine why a doctor would refuse to do a sleeve if you have reflux? The majority of people who have the sleeve also had hernia repair at the same time. Reflux is a fact of life before the surgery.

In any case, OP please do not take medical advise from any of us. Its actually dangerous to do so, none of us are doctors.

Please see your doctor ASAP.

First, I just want to make clear that I believe that anyone with any symptoms that they are experiencing that is causing concern should call their doctor.

That being said and out of the way....

I do clinical health research for a living (at a reputable university) and work with several gastroenterologists. The reason they do not recommend this surgery on those with GERD pre-op (at least here) is because the literature (peer reviewed research) is very clear that there is a strong positive correlation between Sleeve Gastrectomy and post-op GERD. Try "Association between gastroesophageal reflux disease and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy." (Crater et. Al.) Another article by Himpens, "Long Term Results After Laporascopic Sleeve Gastrectomy" finds that 1 in every 4 patients (77.5% at 3 years and 53.3% at 6+ years, P<.0001) who have this surgery develop GERD. However, the sleeve performed in combination with a hiatoplasty (Jossart, G., 2011) may cure reflux in some patients but it also states that if GERD is later developed, then the surgery can be converted to a Bypass. So, there is the data folks. If you haven't had the surgery yet, I think it's a good idea to talk about this with your doctor. I am a firm believer in patient-doc shared decision making with all the current medical literature out there in the open. Ultimately, it's your decision in coordination with your doctor.

For those who have their own experiences or opinions, that's great for you but just because my great old aunt who smoked until she was 95 didn't get lung cancer, doesn't mean that smoking doesn't cause lung cancer. When there is research to indicate that there is an alternative that might be better for someone, why not consider having the discussion at least?

So, that's it from me. I wish all of you the best and hope that the OP gets better soon! Good luck!

My surgeon did tell me that my reflux could get worse after being sleeved and the sleeve is not the first surgery they recommend for those with severe reflux. However, I am not a candidate for bypass due to an autoimmune disease. But if he thought is should not be done at all, he wouldn't do it. You have to make an informed decision - weighing the benefits vs. the risks (as in all surgeries). My weight also contributes to my reflux so in that respect it could get somewhat better. I also may have a hernia that can be repaired. As with any surgery, it is best to discuss all the risks of surgery and come up with the best decision based on your specific needs and health issues.

Same here. We were told the band was actually better for people with reflux. less acid in there to deal with after.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
