Many surgeons have requirements for dieting before surgery. You may have to lose 5 - 10% of your excess weight before your surgery date. Others have no pre-op diet requirements at all.

Sometimes the diets are very low carb, others recommend liquid diet supplemented by salads and lean grilled meats. It may vary program by program.

Many also require up to 2 weeks of liquid only diet prior to surgery. It's really all over the board.

Bottom line is that most agree that losing weight before surgery reduces the amount of fat in and around the liver which makes the surgery safer. The liver gets moved around during surgery and a fatty liver is more prone to damage.

I think that the other benefit of the pre-op diet is to help you to build the self control needed for post op. That being said many people have cheated on there pre-op diets including me, and when I ask my Dr about it he said it was OK as long as I regained control and continued to lose weight. Most of these diets are just what the Dr. has found in his experience produces the best overall results. Good Luck.

I was on a week clear liquid diet with Protein Shakes, I just couldn't do the Protein shakes, so I just mostly drank Water and chicken broth once and a few sugar free Jello. I was finally able to tolerate 2 sugar free carnation breakfasts, but that was the limited protein I had. I was shaky, nauseated, extremely fatigued and just feeling so sick, but on the positive side I was done 10 pounds and was being strong and doing so awesome. But, then I completely screwed up today and 2 days before my surgery. I am so upset with myself. I was completely fine on my own, but went to a family function with a ton of food and it got the best of me! I had a few bites of salad and wait for wait for it..a Peanut Butter bar. Eek! What the hell did I just do? I really hope this doesn't cause any complications with my surgery or starts me out with a major setback. Now I am really worried. I have got to find some protein shakes that I like and stat.

Don't worry most people whether they admit it or not cheated at least once during their pre-op diet, including me. After I cheated I asked my surgeon and he said it would not be an issue that he expects people to cheat a little because we are all human and obviously got the way we are because of bad habits and poor self control. So I think unless you totally blew off the pre-op diet and gained weight leading into the surgery it won't be an issue and even then some people don't even have a pre-op diet so I wouldn't worry to much but if you are scared you can always ask your Dr. Good Luck.

I've had a couple of oyster crackers here and there and ate the broth of French onion Soup (maybe a few onions snuck in). But aside from that I've shocked myself with how I've complied with the pre-op diet. Although I do have a couple of days left!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
