Do any low BMI-ers regret having the surgery?

Recommended Posts

No regrets. I've been dieting all my damn life. Lost the weight, gained it back...Ground Hog Day. As I got older it was harder to get it off, and when I crossed the 200lb threshold I developed sleep apnea and high blood pressure.

I tried for another 5 yrs to get my weight under control. sleep deprived and depressed, I weighed 220 when I finally made the decision for surgery.

I'm down to 196lbs in since 1/8/13. I'm religious about following my doctors instructions and having good results. Not hungry AT ALL. It was the right choice me, you have to decide if it's the right thing for you. I did have a few fleeting moments of doubt, before the surgery - but not after.

Sorry to hear of your bad experience when there are so few of them posted thanks for your honesty. Did you have the vsg procedure?

Yes I had the first surgery Aug 28th (VSG) and then repair in late september (I don't actually know the date..I was a bit out of it!).

Iggychic, I noticed you and I had the same surgeon. I am curious, what exactly caused all your problems during surgery? Did you end up with a leak?

Michelle, Dr. Hunter repaired the leak and is now my surgeon. He had nothing to do with the first surgery.

Thank you for the thread and everyone's posts. I am lower BMI person. My surgery is scheduled for 1/29/2013 down in MX. I am glad you all are validating my reasons for choosing this surgery.

Mary

I am getting mine done in Mexico on 1/29/2013 too. Who is doing yours. Maybe we will be there together.

I just had surgery on 1/18. I will say, day 2 & 3, I regretted, now that I am a veteran at 4 days post op (lol), and feeling better, the jury is still out for me. I had surgery at 5'2" and 179. I had gotten up to 205 just a few months ago when I decided to have surgery. I have struggled with my weight for 20 years. My recovery is going relatively well. I have gotten about 30 oz. of Fluid in so far today. Things are looking up and I doubt I regret this even a week or so from now if things continue to progress. Fingers and toes crossed.

I am 10 days post op and was considered a low BMI by Dr standards, no comorbidities.

I have absolutely no regrets at this point. I've lost 20 lbs in 10 days, 26 total (6 lbs preop) I feel great. Easy recovery to date.

I am sure my weight loss will slow down soon, and I am ok with that. I NEVER expected it to work for me and was prepared for slow weight loss.

Good luck on your journey.

I am five weeks post op, started 192, now down to 162. I was 180 on the day of surgery. I am 17 pounds from my doctor's goal, and 32 from my personal goal. Today, I went back into high overweight on the BMI for what I hope (know) is the last time. There are few who have complications, and for them, I understand the regret. However, the majority of people I have encountered her and at support meetings are very pleased with the surgery. The consistent message is that the surgery doesn't make it easy, but it does make it possible. That is what I am finding. They operate on your stomach, not your head. I've made a few snack choices that I can't quite believe, which were "head choices". We have all battled with this our whole lives, and your head will sabotage you, or at least mine will. I did a check in with myself about why I did the surgery, and lost 3.2 pounds this week. Nobody can be perfect all the time, but the surgery gives you kind of a "do over" with your stomach. Starting over with a smaller stomach is amazing. But we still choose every bite we take. Protein, support groups, Water. All vital to success.

I love the low bmi threads on this site. Very helpful.

I'm 5' 6 and weigh 216.6 lbs bmi is exactly 35 w/1 co-morbidity so I qualified by the skin of my teeth. Hoping my insurance approves my surgery. I'm doing this to keep the weight off for good this time. I'm 45 years old and have lost and regained since my teens. I hope to get a March surgery date and pray I have no regrets.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
