Alcohol and 2 weeks post op!

Recommended Posts

It wasn't on my menu but it wasn't off it either. The main thing it said to avoid it was due to calories and to be careful because it will hit you way stronger. And it didn't

So do you mind sharing the name of the doc who feels that drinking is fine two weeks out? I'd love to see their endorsement.

BTW...my doc did not say I couldn't swallow swords....anyone want to join me at the sword swallowing festival this weekend? I'm sure it will be fine cuz no one said it wouldn't be!

Now I know why so many people complain about this forum , it's supposed to be an informative and support page . Not a page for people to express negative opinions . If u have some informative info you would like to share with actual facts I would maybe hear what you are saying . Sounds like you are just bored on a Saturday night and want to chime in with all the other negativity .

This got so any posts that I decided to talk to the expert. I work with my surgeon and asked him the question. He said alcohol too early runs the very high risk of causing ulcers on the staple line and causes a likelihood of a leak.

Sarah, actually quite the opposite. As outrigger posted, it's dangerous. I experienced the hell that a leak is and I don't want to see someone eat or drink their way back into the hospital. But given that position, reading threads like this does tick me off and make me say inappropriate things so I'm going to bow out. Just understand that you are risking your life when you take that drink in many ways. I'm NO puritan :) But if you can't abstain until you are healed you are either grossly misinformed or you need to see someone for some help outside of the surgical field. I hope you stay healthy and well. Good luck

There are several issues with alcohol, and different docs have differeing concerns about them. The basic initial concern is healing of the stomach, and that's where many docs come down to something around a three month limitation. Empty calories, too is a concern during the weight loss period, but that's no different than talking about Twinkies or any other kind of junk food. The biggie that some docs fret over is liver health - as obese patients, our livers are generally in pretty poor shape to begin with, and then they are further taxed with their role in metabolizing all of the fat that we are losing - they don't need any more stress from metabolizing the alcohol. So, that's where some docs come up with a no alcohol during the entire weight loss period policy - this is my doc's plan, and he's a bit more anal about liver health than most WLS docs as he also does liver transplants, and he doesn't want to see his bariatric patients coming back as transplant patients. The other concern is the prospect of transfer addiction - many of us were addicted to food, and with that taken away by the surgery, that addiction can be transferred to something else that was never a problem pre-op, like alcohol or gambling - so that is something to watch out for. The other thing to watch is that most find that their body's response has changed - usually feeling the alcohol's effects sooner and with less (things tend to go thru quicker, particularly liquids), but then they tend to recover quicker, too. Those are the major issues that influence the differerent surgeons' policies on alcohol and WLS, so take them for what you will. Overall, the occasional drink is not likely to be any more harmful than the occasional twinkie, but there are potential problems with it being a regular thing during the post-op period. Good luck, and may you have something to celebrate!

If you don't want to get too skinny then why would you get something as drastic as gastric sleeve surgery? Not only is alcohol empty calories but your sleeve is still healing and you could potential burn your staple lines. Ever pour alcohol on a wound? Yeah that's what you are doing to your stomach.

While I don't believe drinking alcohol so soon after surgery is a good idea. I am really appalled at the attitudes of some people on here, I thought this was supposed to be a support forum not a act like children and call people names forum.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
