how soon can I use a Spa and Pool?

Recommended Posts

Ok I know this is a dumb question- but I want to hit the gym tonight for some cardio, and my back has been killing me. I would love to dip in the pool and spa.... I need some fraking relaxation. But, I was only banded on 10-26-06. Do you think this is too soon? Or are my stitches ok to get wet? I still have the glue over them and its peeling a little bit. My instruction from the doc was to wash em with soap, but I never heard nothing about soaking in Water. I dont want an infection. Any ideas guys?

Thanks

~Raynie!:help:

I would take a bath at home, but not in a public spa. I was allowed to take a real bath after 14 days. I was swimming in my families pool on the 15th day. I would be careful in the public pool/spa with stitches, there are chemicals and bacteria in there not to mention that is someone peed in it. ~Mandy

Public spas breed yeast infections unless it is superbly maintained. Which most are neglected because the pool is the most maintainable.

6-8 weeks after operation is my guess for soaking and I suggest spending some money on some great bath items and relax in there.

you want to make sure your stiches and sutures are cometely healed. COMPLETELY healed no matter where you soak. Your own tub or a public soak it it doesnt' matter, don't soak until you are completely healed.

Another option, band-aid makes a waterproof bandage, it is a latexy material that forms a seal around the area to be protected. I have used them to cover tattoos while healing so I could go swimming. (it is advised that you don't swim or soak a tattoo for 14 to 21 days) They are expensive but work well. ~Mandy

A public pool has tons of chlorine and is usually cold whereas a public spa sometimes has less chlorine and is hot. This combination leads to a tremendous overgrowth of bacteria, yeasts, even viruses. I never go in public spas, for this reason, ever, and only go into public pools cautiously, such as at a nice exclusive hotel where I know it is properly maintained. I would not swim in either soon after surgery, because your body is still recovering and might even be more susceptible to infections.

Thanks guys- you talked me out of it! I ended up taking a shower until all the hot Water ran out... lol

also the spa and pool I go to is at 24 hour fitness gym. I do know that they do clean it and maintain it well. i just want to go back to water aerobics... /cry. I suppose i can wait a few more weeks! Thanks again for all the advice. ~Raynie!
