Getting discouraged

Recommended Posts

Not having had "food" for three weeks (two pre-op and one post-op), and have three weeks left of a liquid diet, I am getting very discouraged. I know that I am not getting my 800 calories in each day, but time passes so quickly and then I realize I have not "eaten" anything for too long of a time period. I can hardly stand the shakes, drinks, yogurt, etc. I have my first post-op appointment with my doctor on Monday, so I hope to get some good advice from him. Three more weeks, though, before pureed foods.

Is it okay to drink herbal teas, or green tea?

Yup, teas are just fine. I was told to avoid caffeine, so you might want to make sure that it's Decaf. I would suggest herbal teas, especially fruit teas, which are delicious.

i am on my week 4. i know exactly what you mean,i hated the sweet drinks! i had chicken noodle Soup broth, hot tea. i started cream of chicken soup thinned with low fat milk then strained the chicken out. best thing to do is keep yourself busy. go for walks.

Poor baby! It's so funny how doctor's orders can be so different. I had surgery on 12-31 and was on liquids for 1 week, then soft for the next week. I have been able to tolerate everything so now I got the ok to eat almost anything. I've been eating lots of Soup, chili. ground meat. etc. I've lost 23 pounds so far. I enjoy the doctored up Protein Shakes for dessert. Good luck to you!

The BEST person to ask this question would be your surgeons office. I am allowed to have Decaf coffee and tea post op but I don't know about you.

herbal teas are fine - they aren't really tea so no caffiene.

Just remember that this will soon be a distant memory. Trust me, once you have lost a bunch of weight you will realize that a few weeks of misery was a small price to pay...

Thanks, everyone! Yes, it is amazing how each surgeon is so different. I know mine would say this is all part of the healing process. And I do agree that this is just a very brief moment in time that leads to greater rewards later. Thanks again!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
