Things i will want or need at hospital & at home first couple of days

Recommended Posts

What did you have/take with you (or wish you had) to the hospital or had at home the first few days that you found worked well (example: extra pillows in bed, what did you have to "eat" that worked well, etc)

Thanks I just wanna be prepared :)

I had pillows but I wish I had a thick warm blanket. And think warm socks.

I took loose nightgowns so I didn't have the waist band hitting the incisions!

flushable wipes was great for clean up and refresh myself, also a big size robe to walks in the hallway. I had seen list here and there are more but those were great to have.

For hospital:

chap stick

phone and charger

computer and charger

loose clothing to wear home

CPAP machine if you have one (they asked for it right away)

For home:

sugar free Popsicles

bottled waters

Mio to flavor Water

Some tiny 2 oz. containers with lids to divide your food up in (for example there is no way you can eat a whole yogurt so you can save the leftovers in these containers for later)

A good book to read

Mixer bottles for your shakes or a blender

Make sure you have your pain meds Rx filled and ready and take it every 4 hours whether you feel the need for it or not the first few days. They told me not to let the pain get ahead of me. But, you won't need it long. :)

Good luck!

Do a search on this. Lilmissdiva, think thats her name, started a thread several months ago... It has an extensive list of things you would never have dreamed of!

I brought my own pajamas. I wore the long pants the first time I walked the halls. When they temporarily disconnected my iv to take a shower, I put my own top on too.

I made the mistake of bringing a knitting project because I find it relaxing. It must have been the drugs because the blanket I was knitting is full of mistakes. It will be a funny reminder if the "old" me.

They wouldn't let me take a full shower until the day after discharge.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
