My name is Beth, I had my surgery last Friday. January 11th 2013. I was out of the hospital the next day. I've been doing pretty well with pain management. The last few days I've noticed my left hip being sore and also my arms and shoulders ache if I use them for a while. Just wondering if this is normal? Also today I tried going for a walk for the first time. About3 minutes into it I felt the urge to go to the bathroom. (#2) so when I got home I was sick an nauseated And when I was done I felt extremely weak. Wondering if anyone else has experienced this? Thanks! Oh and I've list15lbs in 8 days! Crazy!

Congrats Beth, I can'tanswer your question as I am still pre-op ( Jan 30th) but I just wanted to say Congrats on the weight loss. In 11 days I hope to be on the same side. Were you crazy nervous pre-op?

Hi Beth,

I got my surgery exactly 1 day before you. I have not had any problems with pain. I have done some walking but I really made an effort to pace myself. A lot of folks say they experience fatigue and I didn't want to push. I walked about 40 minutes the other day. I experienced some nausea a couple of days after my surgery, but I think it had more to do with the anesthesia than the surgery. Any extraneous pain I have felt has been moving gas. The walking helps with that a lot. Congrats on your progress!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
