OTC omeprazole -- what should I be looking for?

Recommended Posts

My doctor wants me to take, and I quote, "OTC omeprazole 20mg - take one by mouth twice a day for 6 months (crush & dissolve in liquid)." However, every type of omeprazole on the drugstore shelf says "do not crush."

Am I missing something? Anyone have any suggestions for me?

My surgeon told me to start taking some of my meds on day 4 - two pills and a capsule. I've had no problems with them. I also take prilosec when needed - they are caplets and go down easily for me.

While my sleeve seems to haves hard time with certain textures still (chicken, eggs), I've always been able to swallow my Ppi meds and Tylenol for pain. They never felt stuck or anything. Taken with as small amount of liquid as possible to get them down. (I'm a little past 3 months post-op).

I take omeprazole twice a day and have been taking the tablet whole since day after surgery and have had no issues at all. All my meds post op were whole and I was able to take them all fine (although it was a little tricky at times taking 2 pain pills with only a sip of water)
