12345 80 Posted January 18, 2013 The main reason I had the surgery was to try to get rid of my diabetes. Losing weight was a bonus. Prior to surgery, I used to take Metformin as well as insulin 3 times a day. Since my surgery, I'm off Metformin and have not required insulin. However, I wonder if that's because I hardly eat anything (I'm in the soft-food stage). I worry that I'll need insulin once I'm on regular foods. Anyone else out there also a type 2 diabetic? How is your diabetes pot-surgery?

NewBegin56 7 Posted January 18, 2013 I had surgery 12/27. Prior to that I was taking taking 125-150 units of insulin a day via an insulin Pump. Since my surgery, I am not using the pump and take a unit of insulin if my blood sugar goes above 150. I've taken less than 20 units of insulin TOTAL since surgery. As I add additional food (I'm on pureed now), I might need a bit more insulin, but my Dr feels that the increased food and decreased weight will balance everything out and I'll be able to get completely off insulin. NewBegin56 7 Posted January 18, 2013 I was also on Metformin before surgery, but not now.
Liberated Sleeve 148 Posted January 18, 2013 I was on 3 meds for my diabetes. Insulin 130 units, Victoza and Metformin 1000mg x2 a day. I took no meds after I left the hospital for my diabetes. Sugars running around 110 fasting. Less than 60 days out of surgery my diabetic A1C was down to 5.7%. It was 6.7% before surgery with the 3 meds. Today 10 months out at 5.5% Sugars run anywhere from 78 - 92. A bonus: my high blood pressure is back into the normal ranges. I was on 2 meds before surgery. No meds since surgery for that one either. Good luck and God bless you!

mommyradd 115 Posted January 18, 2013 I was on two meds prior to surgery. I have had Type 2 Diabetes for about 15 years. My surgeon told me that someone who has had it that long will most likely not be "cured" after WLS, but it could significantly reduce the risk of other diseases. That being said, I went home off of the meds. Two weeks later, I had to get back on Metformin 500 MG twice daily because my levels went back in the 150's. Now that I'm almost 9 weeks out, I check my sugar, and only take the Metformin if it's over 120. My A1C was originally 9.8 in early 2012, then down to 6.5 prior to surgery. I don't know what it is now, but I'm pretty confident that it's lower;)
